PET film is a polar film with a surface tension of 45-50 dyn without treatment. It is also a film with good adhesion regardless of the type of plastic ink printed on it. However, when two-component polyurethane glue is used on the way, and after dry lamination with other films, especially with PE films, the phenomenon of the printed ink layer being adhered to the PET film by the glue and delaminating (especially when laminating thicker PE films) sometimes occurs. In other words, the printing ink layer on the PET film partially or completely transfers to the inner film after lamination. So what is the cause? And what are the ways to avoid it?
Why does ink transfer occur after dry lamination of PET film?
Since PET film has excellent barrier properties and is also highly resistant to leakage, it is difficult for solvents to penetrate, and the solvent absorbency of the ink is relatively poor. The binder (resin) of the plastic surface printing ink has good affinity with the PET film, so the printing on the PET film is more secure than the printing ink in the plastic lamination. In fact, the ink layer of the printed PET film will transfer after lamination, regardless of whether it is printed with surface printing ink or printed ink in the lamination.
How to avoid ink transfer
When printing and dry lamination PET film, you should pay attention to the following:
1. Use as little ink as possible and ensure that the ink is completely dry (through-drying) to prevent the phenomenon of ink drying too quickly (especially when printing with chlorinated polypropylene composite plastic inks). If the printing press cannot be set to full speed and the drying oven is not effective, rewind the printed material once and blow it or leave it for a while while rewinding to allow the ink to harden before lamination (when the printed material is left after printing, it is best to rewind and blow it to prevent the printed film from sticking).
2. When laminating, the amount of glue used must be kept to a minimum, and the solvent in the laminating glue should be allowed to evaporate as much as possible during the drying process (the exhaust system of the drying tunnel should be checked frequently to ensure that it is working properly, and the temperature of the laminating drum in the laminating machine should not fall below 70°C).
SUPPMO-800 series PET screen/pad printing ink
The 800 series is a product specially developed for printing on PET film, sheets, stickers and PC materials. It is a semi-gloss, slow-drying solvent-based ink that provides excellent adhesion and flexibility.
PET ink product features:
This series is a high-color-density, slow-drying ink. It is suitable for high-mesh fine printing, has good reprintability, and provides good adhesion, abrasion resistance, glue resistance, scratch resistance and post-processing adaptability.
PET ink scope of application:
Generally, it is used for printing on PET and PC substrates that require processing, as well as various labels and stickers such as membrane switches, signs, nameplates, etc.
