What is TBC?

TBC molecular formula C18H32O7, molar mass 360·44 g/mol, is a colorless or light yellow liquid, can be mixed with acetone, CCl4, mineral oil, acetic acid, castor oil, alcohol and their solvents; insoluble in water, non-toxic and tasteless, Low volatility, heat resistance, light resistance and water resistance. TBC has good compatibility with vinyl resin, cellulose acetylbutyrate, cellulose acetate, benzyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, etc., and is a good plasticizer with better plasticizing efficiency. Plasticizer; TBC also has the characteristics of anti-bacterial without growing bacteria, non-irritating, flame-retardant and degradable.

TBC preparation method

Citric acid and n-butanol react in the presence of a catalyst and a water-carrying agent to generate tributyl citrate, and the product is obtained through processes such as dealcoholization, neutralization, water washing, steam stripping, decolorization, and filter press.

TBC reaction principle

Tributyl citrate can be synthesized by the esterification reaction of citric acid and n-butanol. The traditional esterification catalysts are strong acids such as sulfuric acid and benzenesulfonic acid, which are low in price and high in catalytic activity, but have many side reactions, complicated post-processing, severe corrosion of equipment, and waste acid emissions that seriously pollute the environment. Therefore, non-acid-catalyzed synthesis of ester products has been a long-term research goal of people. There are many studies on activated carbon-supported heteropoly acid, cation exchange resin and mixed rare earth chloride. However, the above methods have many post-treatment process steps, which are not easy to control, and the catalyst preparation process is complicated, which is not conducive to application and promotion.

TBC Usage

This product is soluble in most organic solvents. It has the characteristics of low volatility, good compatibility with resin, and high plasticizing efficiency. Therefore, it is allowed to be used in the production of food packaging and medical and sanitary products in various countries in the world, as well as children’s soft toys, pharmaceuticals, medical products, flavors and fragrances. , Cosmetics manufacturing and other industries.

TBC can endow products with good cold resistance, water resistance and mildew resistance. The resin exhibits good transparency and low-temperature flexing performance after being plasticized with this product, and has low volatility and low extractability in different media, good thermal stability, and does not change color when exposed to heat. The lubricating oil made with TBC has good lubricating properties.

In the past few years, the main plasticizers often used in industry are phthalate plasticizers. Because phthalate plasticizers can induce carcinogenesis, foreign countries have strictly controlled their use, and my country has also formulated Relevant laws and regulations will gradually phase out its use in food packaging materials, medical equipment and toys.
