Waterborne appliance topcoat additives should solve a defined exposed-film defect while preserving the full finish specification. Separate wetting/leveling from entrained air and dry handling. Then verify gloss, color, hardness, abrasion, adhesion, cleanability, cure and assembly contact. A surface additive cannot compensate for the wrong binder, pigment dispersion, spray settings or bake.

Keep the topcoat intent distinct
The appliance topcoat is the exposed appearance and service layer. Its first questions are visible flow, gloss, color, pinholes, handling and cleaning. Define appliance part, substrate stack, primer/basecoat, topcoat binder, pigment, application, DFT, flash and peak metal temperature before screening additives.

Use 3345 for visible laydown
3345 is the more defensible first route when the wet topcoat does not spread or level evenly. Screen inside 0.1–1.0% at constant pH, viscosity, atomization, wet film and DFT. Record orange peel, crater count, edge pullback, gloss, color, foam, adhesion and cleanability. Begin low; the maximum surface-tension reduction is not automatically the best final film.
The page mentions some defoaming, but that is qualitative. If process air is the measured root cause, evaluate a dedicated foam route rather than over-dosing a wetting/leveling additive.
Use D9904BR for microbubbles and pinholes
D9904BR is 30% active, so report both as-supplied dose and active contribution. The page recommends 0.1–1.0% of total formulation and requires addition through co-solvent into the grind under high-speed stirring. Do not use it as a casual late letdown correction.
Fix shear, time, temperature and DPM contribution. Compare foam density and printed/sprayed pinholes at equal film build. Reject a dose that creates craters, gloss loss, color change, recoat or storage problems.
Gate 3501 before any appliance trial
The 3501 public page supports release and anti-sticking applications but gives no recommended dosage and no appliance-topcoat result. Request a current TDS, starting range, compatible resin systems and a block/release protocol with pressure, temperature, dwell and contact material. Until then, it is not a first blind screen.
First exclude under-cure, excessive DFT, packing above the approved temperature and wrong assembly contact. A release additive may reduce friction while harming rub, overprint, repair-coat adhesion or cleanability.
Prepare matched finish panels
ASTM D823 describes practices for producing uniform coating films on panels. Use the full appliance stack and measure actual DFT and peak metal temperature. Include production spray panels because drawdowns do not reproduce atomization or orange peel. Age panels to the specified cure before final comparison.

Measure gloss with the geometry reported
ASTM D523 covers specular gloss at 20°, 60° and 85°. Report instrument, geometry, calibration, color and surface texture. Gloss does not fully describe distinctness of image, haze or orange peel, so combine instrumental and agreed visual/texture assessments.
Separate hardness from abrasion
ASTM D3363 provides a pencil-hardness method useful for cure and production control within a consistent lab. ASTM D4060 provides a Taber abrasion comparison on rigid panels. Hardness, scratch, mar and abrasion are not interchangeable; report each required response with fixed conditions.
Protect adhesion and repair coating
Use ASTM D3359 as an agreed coated-metal tape-adhesion reference and record failure locus. Test the full layer stack after cure and after required humidity, water, detergent or heat exposure. If field or factory repair coating is part of the specification, apply it at the maximum allowed interval and verify intercoat adhesion.
Simulate appliance use and assembly
Test guide rails, stacking pads, gaskets, fasteners, packaging, cleaning agents, kitchen grease or laundry chemicals relevant to the part. Fix load, temperature, dwell and cycles. A topcoat that looks smooth on a fresh panel but marks during assembly or loses gloss after cleaning is not approved.
Selection rules
- Choose 3345 for reproducible wetting or visible flow failure.
- Choose D9904BR for measured air-linked defects through its required high-shear route.
- Do not test 3501 until dose, appliance compatibility and block/release method are supplied.
- Reject any candidate that weakens cure, color/gloss stability, adhesion, abrasion, cleanability or assembly performance.
