Waterborne appliance primer additives should be chosen around the metal interface and the complete factory-cure process. The primer must adhere to prepared steel or aluminum, support corrosion protection, accept the next coat and survive forming or impact. A wetting agent or defoamer can remove a process barrier; it cannot replace pretreatment, binder chemistry, anticorrosive pigment, film build or cure.

Define the appliance-primer job

Record appliance part, steel/aluminum grade, cleaning and pretreatment, time to coating, primer binder, anticorrosive pigment, PVC, pH, co-solvents, application, wet/dry film thickness, flash and peak metal temperature or cure schedule. State whether the next layer is a basecoat or topcoat and define its recoat window. Use 3071 for verified metal-entry failure

3071 is the simpler first wetting benchmark when the primer retracts or spreads unevenly on prepared metal. Run a ladder within 0.1–1.0% at fixed pH, viscosity, atomization and DFT. Record edge pullback, crater count, flow, foam, adhesion and recoat. In waterborne systems, include foam because the product page explicitly warns of foam stabilization.

Do not use improved wetting to excuse contaminated panels or inadequate pretreatment. Repeat on multiple metal lots and at both fresh and aged treatment conditions.

Use D9904BR for process air

D9904BR is 30% active and its 0.1–1.0% recommendation is based on total formulation. Its page instructs adding the defoamer to co-solvent, then incorporating it into the grind under high-speed stirring. Late addition is not recommended. Record as-supplied dose, active contribution, DPM contribution, shear, time and temperature.

Judge foam and microbubbles separately from wetting. A smoother primer is not approved until adhesion, corrosion and recoat results remain acceptable.

Keep 3467 out of a generic first shortlist

3467 may react through hydroxyl groups with isocyanate, so it belongs only in a defined polyurethane reaction route. The public OH value is an upper limit, not an exact batch value, and the page publishes different dose bases for solvent coating, resin modification and waterborne coating. Obtain the current COA and TDS, identify the correct denominator and recalculate NCO/OH.

If the appliance primer is a 1K acrylic, epoxy dispersion or another non-PU system, do not infer a reactive benefit. Use 3467 only after the resin supplier and formulator confirm the mechanism and cure consequences.

Build controlled primer panels

ASTM D823 describes practices for uniform coating films on test panels. Use equal metal preparation, DFT, flash and cure. For factory-baked systems, measure actual peak metal temperature rather than relying only on oven-air setpoint. Include a complete primer-plus-next-coat panel because the primer’s recoat function is essential.

Test adhesion with failure locus

ASTM D3359 is a tape-adhesion reference for coated metal. Fix cure age, film thickness, tape, cuts, operator and removal angle. Record whether failure is metal/primer, within primer or primer/next coat. Test dry and after the specified humidity, water or corrosion exposure.

Use corrosion exposure as comparative evidence

ASTM B117 specifies operation of salt-spray apparatus but does not set a universal exposure duration or predict field life by itself. Agree substrate, scribe, hours and rating criteria. Compare replicate controls and candidates at equal DFT/cure and report blistering, rust, undercutting and post-exposure adhesion.

Include forming or impact where the part requires it

ASTM D2794 evaluates rapid-deformation impact of a coating/substrate. Use ranking within the same laboratory because numerical reproducibility between laboratories is limited. Match the test direction and severity to the appliance part, then inspect cracking and adhesion.

Selection rules

  • Use 3071 for a demonstrated metal-wetting problem, with a waterborne foam check.
  • Use D9904BR for air-linked pinholes through its required high-shear grind route.
  • Do not use 3467 without a defined PU reaction route, exact OH data and stoichiometry.
  • Reject any surface improvement that weakens adhesion, corrosion, impact or recoat.
