Waterborne plastic primer additives should be selected by primer function: substrate wetting, compatibility/flow, or high-shear air release. WD-D545 is the plastic-paint-specific wetting route, CHLUMIAG® 3467 is the compatibility-focused surface route, and DF-D9904BR is the waterborne grind/high-shear defoamer route. None creates adhesion to untreated low-energy plastic by itself.

A plastic primer must bond to the exact polymer grade and accept the specified topcoat after aging. Mold release, recycled content, fillers, cleaning, corona/plasma/flame treatment, treatment decay, primer film build, flash and cure can dominate performance.

Control polymer, cleaning and treatment first

Record polymer family/grade, recycled content, fillers, mold-release package, molding temperature/history, cleaning chemistry, handling, treatment type/energy, measured surface condition, time from treatment to coating, and part geometry. Flat laboratory sheets may not reproduce recesses, edges or mold-specific contamination.

Surface activation improves wettability but can decay or vary across a part. Use production-representative parts and compare known-good preparation with the failing condition.

Include an untreated control, a freshly treated control, and a production-aged treated part in the same trial. If only the fresh control passes, the priority is treatment control or coating timing rather than more additive. If all three wet uniformly but adhesion fails at one interface, investigate resin choice, cure and recoat conditions.

Use WD-D545 for a confirmed wetting failure

WD-D545 is more specific than a generic wetting route because its public page explicitly lists waterborne plastic paint. Start at the low end of 0.1–0.5% after contamination and treatment are controlled. Its flexible addition can support diagnosis, but production still needs a defined stage and mixing history.

Measure wet-film continuity, edge coverage, craters, leveling, sag, gloss/haze, fresh and aged adhesion, water resistance, and topcoat acceptance. Because its published defoaming rating is zero, do not increase it to solve microfoam.

Use 3467 for compatibility and flow

3467 fits a primer that already wets but still shows compatibility-sensitive flow. The public waterborne range is broad, so use a small internally justified ladder and test the product alone before rebuilding combinations.

Protect primer-to-plastic adhesion, primer-to-topcoat adhesion, recoat window, gloss/haze, foam, craters, cure and water resistance. Better flow does not prove stronger interfacial bonding.

Use DF-D9904BR for high-shear air

DF-D9904BR is appropriate when air follows a defined waterborne manufacturing or application stage. Follow the page’s co-solvent and high-shear abrasive/grind instruction. A post-addition to a finished primer is not equivalent.

Track foam generation/decay, density, wet-film bubbles, cured pinholes, craters, gloss, adhesion, recoat and storage. Select the lowest level that controls air without introducing incompatibility.

Build a two-interface primer trial

  1. Fix the plastic interface. Hold polymer grade, mold history, cleaning, treatment and age.
  2. Fix manufacture. Hold binder, pH, solids, pigments/fillers, water, order, shear and aging.
  3. Fix application/cure. Hold viscosity, film build, flash, airflow, humidity and temperature.
  4. Fix the topcoat. Hold topcoat batch, recoat time, cure and film build.
  5. Change one route. Compare blank plus compact ladder and repeat after water/heat/aging.

Measure adhesion with method limits visible

ASTM F1842 adapts tape adhesion for certain thin coatings/inks on polyester and polycarbonate membrane-switch plastics; confirm applicability to the actual polymer and part. ASTM D870 covers controlled water-immersion resistance and warns against directly equating laboratory duration with natural exposure. ASTM D823 helps prepare uniform test films.

Report plastic/treatment, film thickness, cure age, conditioning, crosshatch or peel geometry, failure interface, water/chemical exposure, gloss/haze, flex/impact, topcoat adhesion, recoat window and storage. Test fresh and aged specimens.

Common plastic-primer errors

Using wetting additive to replace treatment

WD-D545 can improve spreading but cannot remove mold release or recreate missing/decayed surface activation.

Using WD-D545 as a defoamer

The public page gives a defoaming rating of zero. Use DF-D9904BR for a verified high-shear air problem.

Approving only primer-to-plastic adhesion

The primer must also accept the production topcoat after the specified recoat time and aging. Record both failure interfaces.
