3280 vs 3501 vs 3062 separates printing-substrate wetting, an undosed release/handling route and measured foam control. CHLUMIWE® 3280 is the 100%-active wetting route at 0.2–3%. CHLUMIAF® 3062 is the 100%-active printing-ink defoamer at 0.1–0.5%. CHLUMIAG® 3501 lists printing and anti-sticking applications but publishes no dosage or quantified endpoint.
Choose from the first visible failure. Wetting, craters, circulating air, blocking, rub and release require separate tests.

Define substrate and print process
Record film, foil, paper or board grade, treatment/coating, print side, contamination, ink chemistry, viscosity/pH, color strength, application method, film weight and drying/UV cure. Use production substrate and geometry.
Map the defect at application, after drying, during stacking and after converting. A laboratory drawdown cannot reproduce sustained circulation, web tension, heat or stack pressure.
Use 3280 for confirmed wetting failure
3280 is water-dispersible, 100% active and published at 0.2–3%. It emphasizes low surface tension, substrate wetting, anticrater behavior and compatibility without increasing slip or harming recoatability.
Start low after treatment and cleanliness are controlled. Measure coverage, edge definition, pinholes, color, gloss, adhesion, rub, blocking and overprint/lamination compatibility. A smoother wet film is not enough.
Keep 3501 behind an evidence gate
3501 names printing, overprint-varnish and release/anti-sticking applications but publishes no dosage. It also gives no contact pair, load, temperature, time, release force or rub endpoint.
Request a current supplier-supported dose and test method before sampling. Compare it with the blank and current production control. Do not invent a ladder from its 100% active content.
Define blocking and release quantitatively
For blocking, specify ink-to-ink or ink-to-substrate contact, dry/cure time, stack load, temperature, humidity and dwell. Rate separation force, transfer, gloss/color damage and visible pickoff. For a true release application, define the contact pair, peel direction/speed, aging and repeated cycles.
Keep these endpoints separate from coefficient of friction and hand feel. A surface can feel slippery yet block under heat, or release well while losing adhesion. Until 3501 has a supplier-supported dose and protocol, it remains an evidence request rather than a first formulation recommendation.
Use 3062 only for measured air
3062 is a printing-ink defoamer, not a substrate-wetting agent. Standardize mixing and circulation and record foam height/decay, density and printed voids. Distinguish air bubbles from dewetting and substrate outgassing.
Select the lowest passing level within 0.1–0.5%. Inspect craters, gloss, color, adhesion and downstream bonding. If solvent dilution is used, complete the required stability and defoaming checks.
Run the full printing sequence
- Prepare a blank and one mechanism-specific ladder.
- Print production substrate at controlled viscosity and film weight.
- Dry/cure, rewind or stack under defined conditions.
- Run rub, block, adhesion and converting operations.
- Repeat after liquid and finished-print aging.
Measure printed rub and controlled films
ASTM D5264 compares abrasion resistance of printed packaging using a Sutherland rub tester. ASTM D823 provides practices for producing uniform coating films on test panels.
Use the method that matches the substrate and layer, then add substrate-specific adhesion, blocking, friction, color, gloss and downstream bond tests. Record conditioning, load, cycles and failure mode.
Scale from drawdown to press
At press scale, hold shear history, recirculation, temperature, viscosity adjustment, filter pressure, film delivery and drying/UV dose. Sample at startup and after sustained running. Track foam return and ink density throughout the loop.
Inspect plate, anilox or gravure cylinder, chamber, filters and web after the trial. A drawdown win that causes deposits, delayed foam, color drift or downstream lamination loss is not approved. Repeat the chosen dose on a second substrate lot.
