Sodium molybdate is a key raw material and precipitant in the manufacture of various high-performance inorganic pigments.
• Main uses: Used in the production of red pigments such as molybdenum red and molybdenum chrome red, as well as as a precipitant for various lightfast pigments and lightfast color lakes in purple, green, pink, and blue colors.
• Mechanism of action: It reacts with heavy metal salts (such as lead and silver salts) to form water-insoluble colored molybdate precipitates. These precipitates have bright colors and good lightfastness.
2. Water Treatment and Metal Corrosion Prevention
Due to its low toxicity and environmentally friendly characteristics, sodium molybdate is a substitute for traditional chromate and nitrite corrosion inhibitors in the field of water treatment.
• Metal corrosion inhibitor: As a non-polluting metal corrosion inhibitor for cooling water systems, it is often used to protect pipes and boilers. It often forms a protective film on the metal surface in the presence of dissolved oxygen, and has high thermal stability, making it suitable for systems with high heat flux density.
• Combined use: To improve effectiveness and reduce costs, it is often used in combination with polyphosphates, zinc salts, and benzotriazole, which can significantly reduce the usage amount from 200-500 mg/L to 4-6 mg/L.
3. Catalysts and Chemical Reagents
• Catalyst: Used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions, such as in the oxidation process of organic compounds.
• Analytical reagent: Used as an alkaloid reagent and general analytical reagent in laboratories.
• Other reagents: Used as a metal finishing bath additive, galvanizing agent, and polishing agent in electroplating.
4. Agriculture and Biological Nutrition
Molybdenum is an essential trace element for plants and animals, and sodium molybdate is an important source of molybdenum.
• Plant and animal nutrition: It can be used as a component or additive in fertilizers to supplement molybdenum for plants. In research, it is added to soil or hydroponic solutions to study the role of molybdenum in enzymatic processes such as nitrogen fixation and nitrate reduction in plants.
• Food fermentation: According to the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, it can be used as a microbial nutrient or nutritional supplement, and as a processing aid in the fermentation and manufacturing process of food or beverages.
5. Other Industrial Uses
• Flame retardant: Used in the manufacture of flame retardants.
• Preparation of molybdenum salts: Used as a raw material for the production of other molybdenum compounds (such as molybdic acid).
• Ink manufacturing: Used in ink production.
