Waterborne epoxy anti-sticking additives should be selected by documented epoxy fit, cure state and a defined blocking test. CHLUMIAG® 3512 is the most direct published route: it explicitly lists waterborne epoxy, 0.1–1.0% total-formula guidance and 100% active content. CHLUMIAG® 5000 is a water-only, 50%-active easy-clean/anti-graffiti emulsion, but its public page does not specifically identify epoxy or publish a hydroxyl value.

CHLUMIAG® 3565 is removed from the first shortlist. Its detailed application is dry-process PU leather and release-paper reuse, not waterborne epoxy; its page also shows two different dosage ranges and warns of pinholes.

Prove that the failure is blocking

Blocking is adhesion between two coated faces after pressure, temperature, humidity and time. It is not the same as an uncured film, low hardness, poor abrasion resistance or adhesion loss. Record whether separation causes sound, gloss marking, transfer, tearing or permanent damage.

Hold substrate, film thickness, pigment volume, resin/hardener ratio, induction, application, flash and cure. Compare samples only after equal conditioning. A thicker or wetter film can look more blocking even when additive chemistry is unchanged.

Use 3512 as the epoxy-specific first screen

3512 has the strongest application match because the product page explicitly says it is suitable for waterborne epoxy systems and has good epoxy-resin miscibility. It also claims release, flexibility and anti-yellowing support. Start near the low end of the 0.1–1.0% range with a blank.

Its dilution instructions name alkanes and aromatics even though the page also marks waterborne use. Confirm the preferred waterborne incorporation method with the current TDS rather than introducing an unsuitable solvent. Test 3512 alone before combinations because the page says to avoid mixing.

Use 5000 only for its documented target

5000 is a 50%-active water-only emulsion positioned for easy-clean, hydrophobic/oleophobic, anti-graffiti, anti-blocking and weathering performance. The page mentions reactive OH groups but provides no hydroxyl value or equivalent weight and does not name epoxy.

If the customer needs those functions, obtain current reaction data and confirm compatibility with the actual epoxy dispersion and curing agent. Do not copy the top of the broad 0.5–5% range as a default; report both supplied-emulsion and active addition.

Why 3565 is excluded from the first round

3565 is described primarily as a customized anti-sticking and peeling aid for dry-process PU leather, including reduced residue on release paper. That does not establish waterborne-epoxy performance. Its page lists both 0.05–1% and 0.02–3% total-formula ranges, so the dose itself needs clarification.

The same page warns that pinholes may occur. Introducing it before cure and air are controlled could exchange one surface failure for another.

Measure cure and block resistance separately

ASTM D4946 provides an accelerated face-to-face blocking comparison for architectural paints and emphasizes pressure, temperature, humidity and dwell. Its scope is not a universal waterborne-epoxy specification, so adapt only when the customer agrees.

ASTM D5402 uses solvent rubs to compare solvent resistance during cure, while cautioning that solvent resistance alone does not prove full service cure. Pair it with mix-ratio records, hardness, water resistance and the project’s cure acceptance criteria.

Run an epoxy-system trial

  1. Prepare a blank and compact supplier-supported dose ladder.
  2. Hold epoxy/hardener equivalents, pH, solids, film build and application.
  3. Track pot life, viscosity, foam, leveling, pinholes and dry time.
  4. Condition panels equally before face-to-face block testing.
  5. Repeat adhesion, hardness, chemical/water resistance and recoat after aging.

Common anti-sticking errors

Calling residual tack a blocking problem

Measure water loss, cure development and hardness before changing surface chemistry. A film that is still curing needs a process correction, not a lower-friction surface.

Comparing equal supplied-product percentages

3512 is 100% active while 5000 is 50% active. Report active addition so the comparison does not quietly double one route’s silicone solids.

Ignoring the next coat

Anti-sticking performance can alter surface energy. Test repair coating, topcoat or adhesive bonding at the shortest and longest permitted intervals.
