3163 vs 3166 vs 3370 is a system, handling and endpoint decision. CHLUMIFE® 3163 and 3166 are 100%-active multi-system liquids at 0.05–1.0%. CHLUMIFE® 3370 is a 100%-solid waxy reactive product for UV/solvent systems at 0.05–3%, not a waterborne route.

Feel, smoothness, blocking, scratch and abrasion are separate endpoints. The public 3163 viscosity range is printed as “5000–2000 mPa·s,” an internally reversed value that requires current TDS confirmation. The public 3370 page gives no hydroxyl value or equivalent weight.

Define the endpoint before touching feel

Use a trained panel and a fixed scale for dry, waxy, silky or slippery feel. Keep panel temperature, humidity, film thickness and cure constant. Hand feel is subjective and should not replace friction, blocking, scratch or abrasion measurements.

Map the customer’s actual contact: stacked panels, fingers, fabric, packaging, cleaning or repeated wear. A surface that feels smoother may still scratch or recoat poorly.

Use 3163 after confirming its data

3163 supports smooth feel, gloss, abrasion resistance, anti-blocking, leveling and wetting. Its 0.05–1% range and broad system checkmarks make it a practical liquid screen. However, the page’s “5000–2000” viscosity entry is not a usable range; request corrected data.

Start low and check pinholes at production film build and cure. If pinholes follow air or outgassing, correct that mechanism before escalating surface additive.

Use 3166 with all three warnings visible

3166 emphasizes dry feel and broad surface control, but its page explicitly warns of pinholes, whitening and foam stabilization. Those are not minor notes: they overlap common coating defects and can affect waterborne formulations most strongly.

Test 3166 alone before adding a defoamer. Record foam/density, crater/pinhole count, clarity, gloss and color, then validate combinations with fixed addition order.

Use 3370 only as a reaction-aware route

3370 is a waxy solid that begins melting at ≥50°C and is described as reactive with isocyanate and melamine systems. The public page gives no hydroxyl value or equivalent, so its crosslinker demand cannot be calculated from the website.

Obtain OH data and dissolution/incorporation guidance. Confirm uniformity after cooling and include the additive in NCO/OH or other cure calculations when applicable. Track pot life, hardness, chemical resistance and recoat.

Measure wear and cure independently

ASTM D4060 evaluates abrasion resistance of organic coatings on flat rigid panels. ASTM D3363 provides a pencil-hardness procedure and notes its usefulness for development and cure control.

Neither method quantifies hand feel. Pair them with friction, scratch, blocking, adhesion, gloss/haze, solvent/chemical resistance and recoat at equal cure and film thickness.

Design a blinded feel and blocking study

Prepare coded panels so evaluators do not know the product or dose. Define touch direction, contact pressure and a short vocabulary, then randomize panel order and repeat the assessment. Report agreement among evaluators instead of one person’s preference. Instrumental friction can support the result, but it does not fully reproduce tactile perception.

For blocking, specify coating-to-coating or coating-to-substrate contact, load, temperature, time and separation rating. Condition all panels equally and include the blank. Recheck after aging because additive migration, incomplete reaction or cure drift can change feel and blocking after the initial approval.

Watch production incorporation

3163 and 3166 are liquids, while 3370 is a waxy solid with a published initial melt point. Record addition stage, batch temperature, mixing time and cooling behavior. Screen filters and finished films for undissolved material. A clear hot batch does not prove that 3370 will remain uniformly incorporated after cooling or storage.
