Waterborne floor coating additives should be selected by the first failed function: substrate wetting, high-shear air release, or a separately defined wear/slip target. WD-D547 is the wetting and anti-cratering route, DF-D9904BR is the waterborne grind-stage defoamer route, and CHLUMIFE® 3482/3482X is the water-only slip/wear route. None replaces correct resin, crosslinking, floor preparation, film build, cure, traction, or chemical-resistance design.
Floor coatings are safety-critical surfaces. Lower friction is not automatically better. A wear additive must be qualified against the specified dry/wet traction, footwear, contamination, cleaning, and service conditions as well as abrasion and appearance.

Qualify the floor before the formula
Record concrete age, moisture, vapor emission, strength, laitance, curing compound, oil/chemical contamination, previous coating, repair material, surface profile, dust removal, primer, ambient/substrate temperature, humidity, and dew point. Compare a known-good prepared panel with the failing floor condition.
A wetting additive may make contamination look covered while adhesion remains weak. Moisture, osmotic pressure, incompatible repair compounds, or insufficient profile require substrate correction.
Use WD-D547 only for confirmed wetting loss
Screen WD-D547 after the floor and primer are controlled. Its public page documents surface-tension reduction, wetting/spreading, anti-cratering, recoat, defoaming, and leveling with 0.1–0.5% guidance. Start low and compare a blank.
Measure wet-film continuity, crater count, edge coverage, sag/leveling, foam, gloss, intercoat adhesion, and cure. If defects follow one contaminated area or moisture level, stop the additive ladder and correct the floor.
Use DF-D9904BR for high-shear microfoam
DF-D9904BR fits a waterborne batch that traps air during dispersion, filler incorporation, pumping, recirculation, or application. Follow its co-solvent/high-shear abrasive-stage instruction. A finished-batch post-addition does not reproduce the intended incorporation.
Track foam height and decay, density, wet-film bubbles, cured pinholes, craters, gloss, adhesion, chemical resistance, and storage. Use the lowest level that controls air without creating incompatibility.
Use 3482/3482X only after traction is specified
3482/3482X is limited to water-based systems. The product page requires gradual water dilution, protection from freezing, no alcohol-solvent mixing, short diluted-material storage, and pinhole testing. These restrictions must be part of the batch instruction.
Run abrasion and slip/traction as separate endpoints. Test dry, wet, cleaned, contaminated, and aged surfaces under the customer’s footwear and service conditions. Reject a route that improves wear or feel but reduces safety or increases pinholes.
Why 3166 is not the floor route
CHLUMIFE® 3166 is not a first-choice floor additive because its public page warns of pinholes, whitening, and foam stabilization. Those risks conflict with a waterborne floor film that must remain continuous, fully cured, and safely serviceable. It has been removed from the primary shortlist.
Build a floor-relevant experiment
- Fix substrate and preparation. Record moisture, profile, cleaning, primer, and timing.
- Fix manufacture. Hold order, shear, temperature, pH, solids, water quality, and aging.
- Fix application. Hold mix ratio, induction/pot age if 2K, film build, tools, flash, and cure.
- Change one route. Run a blank plus a compact supplier-supported ladder.
- Age before approval. Repeat adhesion, traction, abrasion, and chemical tests after specified cure and exposure.
Measure wear, chemicals, and film continuity
ASTM D4060 evaluates abrasion of organic coatings and notes effects from abrasive-wheel condition, debris, coating density, and friction. ASTM D968 includes falling-abrasive methods and identifies floor coatings as one use for falling sand. ASTM D1308 evaluates changes such as discoloration, gloss loss, blistering, softening, swelling, or adhesion loss after household-chemical exposure.
Add the specified dry/wet slip-resistance method, adhesion, impact, hardness/cure, film thickness, water resistance, hot-tire pickup if relevant, cleaning resistance, and actual service chemicals. Report the method version, conditioning, abrasive, load, cycles, and failure mode.

Using a slip additive before defining safe traction
Set dry/wet acceptance limits and service contamination first. A lower COF may be unacceptable even if wear improves.
Post-adding D9904BR after pinholes appear
The product page requires high-shear abrasive/grind incorporation. Prepare a valid control before judging performance.
Using wetting additive over contamination
Improved visual coverage does not prove adhesion. Include contamination, moisture, and failure-location evidence.
