Folding carton ink additives must survive printing, drying, coating, folding and gluing. Poor entry on coated board, press foam and dry-print blocking are different failures. Define the board, ink process and conversion sequence first, then screen one evidence-backed route while keeping density, deposit and drying constant.

Define board and conversion

Record board grade, mineral or polymer topcoat, recycled content, surface treatment, moisture and print side. State the ink process, overprint varnish, drying or UV cure, score geometry, fold direction, gluing and packing conditions. A print that looks acceptable flat can crack at a score or interfere with glue.

Use 3280 for measured wetting failure

Start low within 0.2–3.0% and hold board lot, viscosity, anilox or plate, deposit and drying fixed. Measure retraction, pinholes, density and line or dot quality. Check adhesion and overprint varnish after conditioning. Better spreading does not establish stronger binder-to-board adhesion.

Use 3062 for measured process air

Locate air entry during dispersion, pumping, chamber circulation or high-speed transfer. Compare wet density, foam height and decay, pinholes and density stability within the documented 0.1–0.5% range. Reject any dose that reduces foam but creates craters, gloss loss, storage separation or poor rub.

Keep 3501 behind an evidence gate

First exclude retained water or solvent, insufficient UV dose, warm stacking and excessive pallet load. Then request 3501’s current TDS, active content, starting range and a pressure/temperature/time blocking method. Do not invent an equal dose merely because its page lists printing and release applications.

Normalize print density

ASTM D7305 describes reflection-density measurement for prints on paper, film or board. Match density before ranking gloss, rub or defects; different transfer can imitate an additive benefit.

Measure rub and block separately

ASTM D5264 provides a comparative Sutherland rub practice. Fix receptor, load, cycles and conditioning. Blocking needs a separate stack simulation at realistic pressure, temperature and dwell. Inspect set-off as well as visible sticking.

Use the real ink vehicle

ASTM D6687 guides testing of printing-ink vehicles and components. Record resin, pigment, water/solvent/UV status, pH when applicable, film deposit and drying or cure. Run long enough to reveal foam and viscosity drift.

Approve scoring, folding and gluing

Condition printed sheets, then score and fold both with and against grain at production speed. Inspect ink and varnish cracking, whitening and delamination. Apply the intended adhesive to its real glue flap and measure bond after the required cure. Surface migration into the glue area can undermine carton assembly.

Protect packaging compliance

Public pages do not prove food-contact, pharmaceutical-contact or low-migration suitability. Map direct contact, indirect contact and set-off, request applicable declarations and validate the finished carton. Printing performance is not regulatory clearance.

Condition board and prints before decisions

Board moisture changes stiffness, folding and ink holdout. Condition the control and trial sheets together at specified temperature and relative humidity before density, rub, block and fold testing. Record the interval from printing to conversion. A dose that appears successful immediately may fail after the ink, varnish or adhesive reaches equilibrium.

Include at least two production board lots. Mineral-coated board, recycled board and polymer-coated stock can respond differently even when the nominal grade is unchanged. Keep samples from each lot so a later complaint can be separated into board variation, print-process drift and additive response.

Decision rules

Set numeric acceptance limits before seeing the trial results. At minimum, define density tolerance, maximum visible pinholes, rub damage, block rating, fold-crack width and glue-bond requirement. Predefined limits prevent a small visual improvement from outweighing a material conversion failure.

  • Use 3280 only for a reproduced board-wetting problem.
  • Use 3062 for measured process foam within its published ink range.
  • Do not screen 3501 without supplier dose and block evidence.
  • Reject changes that harm density, adhesion, rub, folding, gluing or compliance.
