5005-60 vs 3166 vs 3370 is not a three-way equal-dose contest. The products occupy different system and handling boundaries. 5005-60 is waterborne-only and described as hydroxyl-functional; 3166 spans water, solvent and UV but carries defect warnings; 3370 is marked water-incompatible and its page contains a reactive/nonreactive classification conflict.
Waterborne reactive-emulsion candidate.
Broad-system dry-feel candidate.
Non-waterborne, document-gated route.
Compare the published facts first
| 제품 | System fit | Published amount/content | Main evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5005-60 | 수성 제품만 해당 | 1–3%; 50–60% active | Reactive OH claimed, but no hydroxyl value published |
| 3166 | Water, solvent and UV | 0.05–1%; 100% active | Pinholes, whitening and foam stabilization warned |
| 3370 | Water ×; solvent and UV listed | 0.05–3%; 100% solid; waxy, melt ≥50°C | Reactive description conflicts with nonreactive category |
Choose 5005-60 for a waterborne reaction study
5005-60 is a multi-component modified polysiloxane emulsion. Its page describes reactive hydroxyl groups, crosslinking into hydroxyl-reaction systems, permanent surface fixation, leveling, smoothness, tape isolation and anti-graffiti behavior. It is limited to water-based systems and the published dosage is 1–3% of total formulation.
The page reports 50–60% active ingredient, a ten-point range that matters when active-on-resin levels are compared. No exact hydroxyl value is published. Do not calculate NCO/OH or another stoichiometric balance from the product name. Obtain batch active content, hydroxyl value, resin OH, crosslinker equivalent weight, solids and target ratio before calling it a reactive formulation component.
Choose 3166 for a broad-system feel screen
3166 is a 100% active polyether-modified polyorganosiloxane listed for water, solvent and UV systems at 0.05–1.0% of total formulation. Its page emphasizes dry feel, wetting, smoothness, scratch resistance, anti-blocking, leveling and gloss. It may be added at any production stage.
The warning is equally important: it may cause pinholes or whitening and may stabilize foam. Keep 3166 outside the first shortlist for clarity-critical or foam-sensitive films unless the benefit justifies a controlled risk study. Track haze, color, gloss, wet density, microbubbles and pinholes rather than reporting feel alone.
Quarantine 3370 until the page conflict is resolved
3370 is described as a reactive hydroxyl polyester-modified polysiloxane that can react with isocyanate and is proposed for polyurethane and melamine-crosslinked systems. The same page places it in a “hand feel/abrasion resistance/non-reactive additives” category. This reactive/nonreactive classification conflict must be resolved with a current signed TDS and batch COA.
The page marks water-based use “×” and lists UV and solvent systems “√.” It reports a 0.05–3% range, 100% solids, waxy-solid appearance and an initial melting point of at least 50°C, but no exact hydroxyl value. Do not place 3370 in a waterborne trial, and do not make a reaction calculation until identity, OH value and incorporation are confirmed.
Compare on active material, not equal wet dose
5005-60 at 50–60% active, 3166 at 100% active and 3370 at 100% solids cannot be compared fairly at one as-supplied percentage. After system eligibility is established, set active-on-total-formula or active-on-resin levels from confirmed batch values. Keep carrier water, added solvent and solids balanced in the controls.
For 5005-60, bracket the batch assay in calculations until COA confirmation. For reactive routes, stoichiometry is a separate axis from surface-modifier dose. A statistically neat matrix is still invalid if the chemical equivalence is wrong.
Use a gated matrix
| System | Eligible first screen | Primary measures | Stop gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waterborne OH-reactive | 5005-60 after OH data; 3166 as non-stoichiometric comparator | Cure, feel, block, clarity, adhesion | Stoichiometry unknown or foam/pinhole failure |
| Waterborne nonreactive | 3166; 5005-60 only if reaction route is intended | Feel, slip, gloss, haze, air | 3370 excluded |
| Solvent/qualified bake | 3166; 3370 after document resolution | Cure, incorporation, feel, wear | Identity or OH value unresolved |
| UV | 3166 first; 3370 only with mechanism evidence | Cure, migration, surface and recoat | Surface gain masks cure loss |
Define feel and slip methods
“Soft,” “dry,” “silky” and “slippery” are not interchangeable. Use a blinded panel with reference standards, randomized specimens, fixed conditioning and separate scores for softness, dryness, drag, smoothness and tack. Add instrumental coefficient-of-friction data when the substrate and method are suitable, but do not claim that one number captures human feel.
Measure gloss, wear and adhesion
ASTM D523 measures specular gloss. Hold geometry, film thickness and substrate background constant. ASTM D4060 provides a comparative Taber abrasion method; report wheel, load, cycles, conditioning and endpoint. Use ASTM D3359 for agreed tape-adhesion screening on suitable metal panels, while recognizing its limited resolution.
Check cure and migration
For thermally reactive systems, record mix ratio, induction, pot life, oven profile, peak substrate temperature and a chemistry-appropriate cure indicator. For UV systems, record lamp type, irradiance, energy, line speed, film thickness and oxygen conditions. Recheck surface feel, gloss, adhesion, printability, recoating and blocking after heat and aging so a mobile surface species is not mistaken for durable modification.
Decision rules
- Use system compatibility as the first filter.
- Do not compare unequal active contents at equal wet dose.
- Do not ignore 3166’s pinhole, whitening and foam-stabilization warnings.
- Do not use 3370 in waterborne work or before its classification and OH data are resolved.
Information to send
Provide resin and crosslinker, system type, solids, batch active content, OH and equivalent weights where relevant, cure route, film thickness, desired feel vocabulary and limits for gloss, haze, coefficient of friction, block, adhesion, abrasion and recoat.
Ask Longchang to resolve the chemistry data before selecting among 5005-60, 3166 and 3370.
