Waterborne metal packaging primer additives cannot be selected from appearance alone. The primer must wet the prepared metal, cure at line speed, accept the next coat, survive fabrication and meet the agreed corrosion and pack-test program. A product application listing does not establish food-contact or packaging compliance.

Define the package and coating stack

Record aluminum, tinplate, tin-free steel or other alloy; cleaning and pretreatment; side of application; primer resin/crosslinker; pigments and inhibitors; film weight; oven profile; topcoat, ink or adhesive; forming operation; fill product; sterilization or retort; and storage. External and internal coatings have different exposure and compliance needs.

Use D547 for verified metal wetting

WD-D547 is a 100% active polyether-modified polydimethylsiloxane listed for waterborne systems at 0.1–0.5%. It may be added directly or diluted. Screen it only after the representative cleaned and pretreated metal still shows poor spreading.

Track crater count, coverage, film weight and overcoat adhesion. The page rates varnish transparency only 1 on a 0–5 scale, so a pigmented-primer pass cannot qualify a clear layer. Wetting improvement does not establish corrosion protection or regulatory acceptance.

Use D9904BR for measured air

DF-D9904BR is 30% active in dipropylene glycol methyl ether and recommended at 0.1–1.0% for water-based systems. Premix it into co-solvent, add it to the grind and disperse under high-speed stirring. High-shear addition is required; post-addition is not recommended.

Measure wet density, foam decay, microbubbles and pinholes through the actual circulation and bake. Include its carrier in VOC, flash, extractables and compliance review. Reject a dose that removes foam but causes craters, poor adhesion or pack-test failure.

Keep 3467 behind exact chemistry

3467 is published as 100% active with a waterborne range of 0.5–5% of total formulation. Its OH ≤85 mg KOH/g value is an upper limit, not an exact batch value. It can enter a compatibility/leveling screen, but not an exact reaction calculation from that limit.

A reactive study requires batch OH, resin OH, crosslinker equivalent weight, solids and target stoichiometry, plus the real bake. Otherwise treat it as a non-stoichiometric surface-modifier trial and verify cure, adhesion, fabrication and chemical resistance.

Measure adhesion after forming

ASTM D3359 provides tape-test methods for relatively ductile coatings on metal and has limited resolution. Record film thickness, method, tape, conditioning and failure plane. Test flat and fabricated specimens because bending, drawing or seaming can expose a weakness hidden on a flat panel.

Interpret corrosion tests correctly

ASTM B117 defines operation of salt-spray apparatus; it does not by itself predict service life or set pass limits. Use the customer’s complete corrosion and rating protocol with representative scribe, edge and formed areas, then correlate with the package’s real exposure.

Require pack and compliance evidence

Run the required sterilization, retort, pasteurization, fill-product, extraction, migration, flavor/odor and storage tests through the responsible qualified laboratory. Obtain current composition and compliance documentation for the exact additive grade and market. No article or application list replaces the customer’s legal and pack approval.

Control cure and film weight

Measure wet and dry film or coating weight at fixed positions and verify cure with a chemistry-appropriate method. Compare line start, steady state and end because viscosity, pH and oven balance can drift. Under-cure can appear as weak adhesion, blocking or chemical attack; excessive cure can reduce flexibility. An additive should not receive credit for a change caused by film weight or peak metal temperature.

Retain matched panels before and after the overcoat. Rate flat areas, cut edges, score lines and high-strain formed zones separately. Photograph the failure plane and repeat the best formulation from a fresh batch before advancing to production scale.

Keep regulatory roles clear

The additive supplier can provide identity, TDS, SDS, COA and available compliance statements. The coating maker and package owner must determine whether those documents cover the exact formulation, use level, food type, temperature, duration and destination market. Record that decision in the change-control file.
