Choose wood varnish additives by the first failed property: feel, laydown, or handling. CHLUMIFE® 3370 is the non-waterborne feel route, CHLUMILE® 3432 is the broad leveling and surface-control route, and CHLUMIAG® 3501 is the anti-sticking/handling route. They should not be tested as interchangeable “silicone additives.”

Before adding any of them, stabilize sanding, sealer, substrate moisture, contamination control, viscosity, application weight, flash, and cure. An additive cannot reliably correct telegraphing grain, poor sanding, retained solvent/water, or incomplete UV/thermal cure.

Use 3370 when tactile feel is the primary requirement

3370 is the first comparison when the varnish is solventborne or UV-curable and a waxy/silky touch is the commercial target. The supplier lists it as a waxy solid with an initial melting point of at least 50°C, so the lab must document incorporation temperature, addition order, and mixing energy.

Do not judge only by touch. Measure gloss and haze, abrasion, block resistance, recoat/repair adhesion, and dirt pickup. Repeat after heat aging because surface migration or incomplete dispersion can change the result over time.

Use 3432 when the visible film is still the problem

3432 should move first when the varnish reaches the wood but still shows orange peel, craters, poor leveling, or uneven gloss. Its broad system fit makes it the more appropriate starting point for water-based work than 3370.

Before increasing dosage, confirm substrate contamination, sanding dust, sealer compatibility, application viscosity, flash, and defoamer interactions. Surface-tension reduction can improve laydown, but an excessive level can create foam, craters, intercoat-adhesion loss, or finishing problems.

Use 3501 when the problem has shifted to handling

3501 belongs later in the diagnostic sequence: the film already looks directionally acceptable, but stacked parts, packaging contact, or service handling still creates sticking or marks. Reproduce the actual contact face, pressure, temperature, dwell time, and time after cure.

An anti-sticking improvement is not complete until repair coating, tape, gluing, polishing, and any customer finishing step have been checked. Request the current technical data sheet for the correct starting dosage and system-specific constraints.

A useful three-factor varnish trial

  1. Prepare one process-stable control. Use the same wood species/veneer, sanding sequence, sealer, substrate moisture, film weight, viscosity, flash, and cure.
  2. Change one route at a time. For each candidate, compare a blank and a compact dosage ladder inside the supplier window.
  3. Measure appearance. Record leveling, craters, gloss, haze, color, DOI if required, and visual defects under controlled lighting.
  4. Measure durability. Compare adhesion, pencil hardness, abrasion, scratch/mar, water/chemical resistance, and block resistance after full conditioning.
  5. Challenge repair and assembly. Test recoating, sanding/polishing, tape, glue, and packaging contact used in production.

ASTM D523 describes specular-gloss measurement, ASTM D4060 covers Taber abrasion of organic coatings on planar rigid samples, ASTM D3363 covers pencil film hardness, and ASTM D3359 covers tape adhesion ratings. Use only the methods applicable to the substrate and agree conditioning, film thickness, and acceptance criteria.

Failure patterns that prevent false approvals

Leveling improves but intercoat adhesion falls

Reduce the surface additive, review addition timing and interactions, and repeat after full cure. Do not approve a smoother panel if later coats, repairs, or adhesives lose bond.

The laboratory panel is smooth, but production parts show craters

Audit contamination, sanding dust, compressed air, application equipment, defoamer, and substrate variation. The additive may not be the root cause.

Feel changes after warm storage

Compare immediately after cure and after a defined heat/stack interval. Check dispersion and possible surface migration, especially for a waxy-solid route.

The finish blocks even though it feels dry

Hand feel is not a block test. Recheck conversion, retained solvent/water, film weight, stack temperature, contact pressure, and dwell time.

Frequently asked questions

Which product should I start with in a water-based wood varnish?

Start with 3432 for a leveling/surface-control problem or review 3501 for handling after the film already lays down. Do not use 3370 as the water-based comparison because the supplier excludes it from water-based systems.

Can one additive improve feel, leveling, and anti-sticking?

One product may affect several surface properties, but the trial still needs one primary target and guardrails. Otherwise the lab cannot tell which change created the pass or failure.

Should dosage be chosen by the widest published range?

No. Start at the lowest practical level inside the current supplier guidance and increase only against a defined test result.
