Waterborne offset ink additives cannot be selected from a “water-based compatible” label alone. First document the actual press architecture, plate, fountain or waterless mode, ink rheology, tack and drying route. Only then separate print-face flow, process air and dried-sheet handling.

Confirm what “offset” means
Record whether the process is conventional lithographic offset with fountain solution, waterless offset, dry offset or another transfer process described locally as offset. Document plate and blanket materials, nip, speed and drying. Additive compatibility with water does not prove acceptable ink/water balance, tack, blanket release or plate behavior.
Fix rheology and transfer first
Measure viscosity at defined shear and temperature, yield or low-shear recovery where relevant, tack, misting, pickup, trapping and blanket buildup. Hold pigment, grind, solids, pH and evaporation constant. A smoother drawdown is not evidence of stable press transfer.
For conventional lithography, record fountain-solution pH, conductivity, dosage and temperature with water pickup or emulsification observations. For waterless or dry offset, document plate temperature control and release behavior instead. Do not merge results across these architectures. A candidate must preserve clean non-image areas, acceptable transfer and the established operating window.

Start low within 0.05–1.0% while holding rheology, plate, fountain conditions, blanket and ink feed constant. Measure transfer, density, tone gain, trapping, water pickup, misting, buildup and drying before gloss or feel. Its water, alcohol, alkane and aromatic dilution options do not establish which vehicle is acceptable for this ink.
Use 3062 for demonstrated air
Locate air entry in grinding, letdown, pumping, recirculation or feed. Screen within 0.1–0.5% and track wet density, foam height/decay, transfer and storage. A printing-ink listing supports a controlled first study, not blanket press approval. Reject any loss of transfer, trapping, rub or resolubility.
Keep 3501 behind a data gate
Before dosing, obtain current TDS/COA, active content, recommended range and a defined block or release method. First exclude under-drying, excessive pile temperature, stack pressure and set-off. An application listing cannot justify an equal-dose comparison with 3432 or 3062.

Normalize print density
ASTM D7305 measures reflection density of printed matter on flat paper, film or board, but not metal or foil. Match density before ranking rub, gloss or defects. Density alone does not prove water balance, trap or press stability.
Measure rub after conditioning
ASTM D5264 provides a comparative Sutherland rub practice. Specify receptor, load, cycles, conditioning and evaluation. Run dry, wet or product-contact variants only when the agreed protocol defines them.
Retain printed control sheets from every run stage. Condition them together and blind the appearance and rub ratings where possible, so pile position or reviewer expectation does not become an additive result.
Use vehicle testing as a framework
ASTM D6687 guides testing of printing-ink vehicles and components. Track viscosity, pH, stability, drying and compatibility. It does not replace full plate, blanket, fountain and production-speed qualification.
Repeat through the run
Sample at startup, steady state and end of run. Log ink temperature, additions, fountain conditions, press speed and pile temperature. This distinguishes additive effects from process drift and identifies whether foam or handling problems appear only after recirculation or stacking.
Inspect plates and blankets at fixed intervals and weigh or rate buildup where practical. Record dot gain, slur, doubling, set-off and trap in the same sequence. Drying should be checked at the center and edge of the pile because airflow and temperature are rarely uniform. A release decision needs both immediate print quality and post-stack performance.

- Do not call an additive offset-ready from water compatibility.
- Use 3432 only after rheology and transfer are controlled.
- Use 3062 for measured air within its printing-ink range.
