Offset ink additives should be selected by a reproduced press or converting failure, not by a generic “smoothness” claim. CHLUMILE® 3432 is the documented broad-system leveling route, CHLUMIAG® 3501 is an acrylic-modified silicone route whose public page requires additional technical confirmation, and CHLUMIAF® 3062 is the printing-ink defoamer route when measurable air entrainment exists.

Conventional sheetfed/web offset, heatset, coldset, waterless, and UV offset have different rheology, fountain-solution, set, cure, and converting requirements. A surface additive that improves a drawdown can still damage ink/water balance, emulsification, tack, trapping, dot reproduction, rub, blocking, foil, lamination, or overprint.

Define the offset process before testing

Record conventional or UV chemistry, sheetfed/web/heatset/coldset/waterless press, pigment and vehicle, waxes/driers/photoinitiators, rheology, tack, substrate, fountain solution, conductivity/pH, ink film weight, press speed, dryer or UV dose, pile temperature, spray powder, and finishing. Use the same ink age and press unit for comparisons.

A laboratory film is useful for controlled appearance and cure work, but it does not reproduce plate/water/blanket transfer, emulsification, misting, trapping, or pile pressure. Final approval requires a press-representative trial.

Use 3432 for a verified leveling failure

3432 is the clearest documented leveling route. Its page supports water, solvent, and UV systems with 0.05–1.0% guidance and flexible addition. Start at a low level and test it alone because the public page advises against mixing with other additives.

Track transfer, dot gain, slur/doubling, gloss, mottle, trapping, set/cure, rub, blocking, overprint, foil, lamination, and glueability. A smoother film that loses downstream acceptance is not an improvement.

Treat 3501 as a supplier-qualified handling screen

The 3501 public page confirms an acrylic-modified silicone composition, broad system compatibility, and any-stage/post-addition use. It does not publish a recommended dosage or a quantified anti-sticking test. Therefore, do not copy a dosage from 3432 or market a guaranteed handling effect from the public evidence.

Before screening, obtain the current TDS and define the failure: pile blocking, face-to-back transfer, rub/scuff, coefficient of friction, or converting release. Hold cure, film weight, spray powder, pile temperature/load, and conditioning, then test the supplier-supported range.

Use 3062 only when air is measured

3062 is documented for printing inks across water, solvent, and UV systems, with 0.1–0.5% guidance. Use it when foam or entrained air is reproduced in manufacture, pumping, circulation, or a liquid component—not automatically in every high-viscosity paste offset ink.

Measure air density/volume, foam generation and decay, pinholes, craters, transfer, color strength, gloss, cure, and storage. If solvent dilution is needed, the product page specifically requires stability and defoaming validation first.

Build a press-relevant trial

  1. Fix the ink. Hold vehicle, pigment, additives, age, temperature, rheology, and tack.
  2. Fix press chemistry. Hold fountain solution, conductivity, pH, water setting, plate, blanket, and wash history.
  3. Fix transfer. Hold substrate lot, ink film weight/density, press speed, and unit sequence.
  4. Fix cure/set. Hold dryer/UV dose, pile temperature, spray powder, load, and conditioning time.
  5. Change one route. Run blank and low-dose ladder, then repeat the best candidate through converting.

Measure print and converting guardrails

ASTM D5264 compares abrasion resistance of printed materials under controlled laboratory conditions and is applicable to printed inks, coatings, laminates, and packaging graphics. ASTM D1894 measures static and kinetic friction of plastic film/sheeting and notes strong effects from conditioning, aging, blooming, and surface history. Use it only when that substrate and customer specification are relevant.

Also record density/color, dot gain, trapping, set, cure, gloss, rub/scuff, blocking, COF where applicable, adhesion, crease/fold, foil, lamination, overprint, glueability, odor/migration requirements, and storage. Condition samples and report ink film weight and cure state.

Common offset-ink errors

Using 3501 without a supported dosage

The public page supplies no recommended level. Obtain current technical guidance and do not infer an anti-stick guarantee from the product family name.

Treating 3062 as a default paste-ink additive

First prove an air or foam mechanism. Many offset defects come from rheology, fountain balance, transfer, substrate, film weight, or cure.

Approving only gloss or smoothness

Run the winning formula through the required overprint, rub, pile, foil, lamination, folding, and gluing steps.
