Use 3280 when the substrate is the first barrier

3280 is supported for difficult substrates and the page states that it does not intentionally improve slip or affect recoatability. That makes it a cleaner diagnostic for substrate entry than an anti-sticking product. Verify substrate identity, surface treatment and contamination, then run low/mid/high dose within 0.2–3.0%.

Record wetting, pinholes, density, adhesion, foam and downstream overprint/lamination. The broad dose range is not a target; use the lowest reproducible level that solves the measured defect without creating craters or intercoat problems.

Use 3432 when the wet film needs leveling

3432 is supported for smoothness, leveling, substrate wetting, anti-cratering and use in printing inks, overprint varnishes and multiple coating systems. Its published range is 0.05–1.0% of total formulation and active ingredient is 100%. It may be added at different production stages, but the trial should fix one addition point and shear history.

Choose it after confirming that the substrate is already wetted and the remaining problem is flow or surface uniformity. Test gloss, density, surface texture, rub, block, adhesion and any following print or varnish layer. Do not convert qualitative scratch/abrasion language into a guaranteed value.

Gate 3501 by method and dose

3501’s public application list supports release and anti-sticking, but there is no public recommended dosage. There is also no public pressure/temperature/time blocking protocol. Request both before screening. An equal as-supplied comparison with 3280 or 3432 would have no evidence basis.

First verify drying or cure, retained solvent/water, rewind temperature, roll pressure and storage. If those controls are wrong, a release additive may conceal rather than solve the production failure.

Prepare repeatable prints

ASTM D6687 provides a current guide to printing-ink vehicle/component tests. Match laboratory proofing to the actual print process and hold substrate lot, treatment, viscosity, deposit, cure and conditioning constant. Use a full control formulation rather than comparing the additives in a simplified carrier alone.

Normalize optical density

ASTM D7305 supports reflection-density measurement on printed paper, film and board. Compare additives at the same density target so a change in transferred ink is not misread as better leveling or gloss. The method is not intended for metal or foil.

Separate rub from blocking

ASTM D5264 provides a comparative rub practice. Fix conditioning, receptor, load and cycles. Blocking is a separate face-to-face or face-to-back pressure/temperature/time test. Approve both because increased slip or release can alter rub, print receptivity and converting behavior.

Do not infer packaging compliance

None of the three public pages establishes food-contact, pharmaceutical-contact, low-migration or restricted-substance compliance for a finished package. Obtain the documents required for the destination market and validate set-off or migration on the complete construction.

Selection rules

  • Choose 3280 for a reproducible substrate-entry problem and use the corrected product URL.
  • Choose 3432 for a film-flow or print-face leveling problem after wetting is adequate.
  • Do not test 3501 until its dose and blocking/release method are documented.
  • Reject a candidate that harms density, adhesion, rub, block, overprint or conversion.
