Waterborne metal packaging basecoat additives must support color, cure, clearcoat adhesion, fabrication and the final pack-test program. Good wet appearance alone cannot qualify a can or closure coating. Control metal preparation, film weight, oven profile and the complete coating stack first.

Record aluminum, tinplate, tin-free steel or other metal; cleaning and pretreatment; internal or external location; primer, basecoat, ink and clearcoat; resin/crosslinker; pigment; film weight; line and bake; forming; fill; sterilization and storage. Keep regulatory responsibility with the qualified package approval process.

Use D547 for verified wetting
D547 is a 100% active polyether-modified polydimethylsiloxane recommended at 0.1–0.5%. It may be added directly or diluted. Screen it after representative cleaning and pretreatment still leave pullback, skips or craters. Measure coverage, color and clearcoat adhesion.
The page rates varnish transparency only 1 on a 0–5 scale. A pigmented basecoat pass cannot be transferred to a clear layer. Wetting improvement does not establish food-contact, migration or package compliance.
Gate 3467 by exact cure chemistry
3467’s OH ≤85 mg KOH/g is an upper limit, not an exact batch value. A polyurethane calculation needs batch OH, resin OH, crosslinker equivalent, solids and target NCO/OH; other bake systems need their own cure evidence. Without it, treat 3467 as a non-stoichiometric surface-modifier trial.

Measure adhesion after fabrication
ASTM D3359 provides tape-adhesion screening for relatively ductile coatings on metal and has limited resolution. Record film thickness, method, tape, conditioning and failure plane. Test flat and formed areas after the clearcoat.
Interpret corrosion exposure correctly
ASTM B117 defines salt-spray apparatus operation; it does not set product pass limits or predict service life by itself. Use the agreed complete corrosion/rating procedure and correlate it with actual package exposure.
Require pack and compliance evidence
Run the required retort, pasteurization, fill-product, extraction, migration, flavor/odor and storage tests through qualified procedures. Obtain current documentation for the exact additive grade, use level and market. A product application list does not establish packaging compliance.
Control color, film weight and cure
Measure line start, center and end with the agreed color instrument and conditions. Verify basecoat and clearcoat film weights and cure. Under-cure, excessive cure or film-weight drift must not be credited to an additive. Repeat the best formulation from a fresh batch.
Diagnose color and coverage separately
Measure opacity, color difference and visual uniformity at equal dry film weight. For effect pigments, include multi-angle measurement and orientation-sensitive inspection. Check pigment settling, recirculation, viscosity, roll settings and flash. A wetting additive can improve edge coverage while changing pigment orientation, so both responses must remain within specification.
Inspect the basecoat/clearcoat interface
Apply the representative clearcoat at the minimum and maximum permitted interval. Identify whether failure occurs at metal/basecoat, within the basecoat or at basecoat/clearcoat. Repeat adhesion and appearance after forming, retort or pasteurization as applicable. A bare-basecoat pass does not qualify the package stack.
Control air and contamination
Measure wet density, foam persistence and microbubbles through make-up, pumping and application, even when no defoamer is being compared. Use clean tools and representative pretreated metal. Contamination craters, entrained air and poor metal wetting need different responses.
Advance through documented change control
Move only the smallest passing candidate to line scale. Log raw-material lots, bath age, pH, temperature, viscosity, film weight, line speed and oven profile. Retain panels and pack samples from startup, steady state and run end, and record the compliance review before permanent release.
