Choose waterborne topcoat additives by process stage. CHLUMILE® 3345 addresses wetting and leveling, AGESIN® DF-D9904BR addresses foam and microbubbles when introduced under high shear, and CHLUMIAG® 3501 addresses anti-sticking and finished-film handling. The correct starting point is the earliest stage that fails in a controlled drawdown or application trial.
Before changing the additive package, record resin neutralization, pH, viscosity at application shear, substrate temperature, wet-film weight, air flow, flash, and cure. Waterborne defects often change with evaporation and process conditions, so one attractive laboratory panel is not enough.
Waterborne topcoat additive decision map
| First repeatable failure | First route | Critical process requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Weak wetting, craters, orange peel, or uneven gloss | CHLUMILE® 3345 | Keep foam, sag, edge coverage, and intercoat adhesion as guardrails |
| Air is generated or retained during manufacture/application | AGESIN® DF-D9904BR | Add during grind or another validated high-shear stage |
| Appearance passes but cured parts stick or mark | CHLUMIAG® 3501 | Reproduce actual stack pressure, temperature, dwell, and cure age |
| Termék | Published description | Supplier starting guidance | Trial boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHLUMILE® 3345 | Polyether-modified polysiloxane; water, solvent, and UV systems | 0.1–1%; any production stage | Screen for wetting and leveling, then verify foam and adhesion |
| AGESIN® DF-D9904BR | Water-based, silica-free defoamer; 30% active | 0.1–1%; high-shear or grind-stage addition | Do not treat it as a universal late post-addition rescue |
| CHLUMIAG® 3501 | Modified polysiloxane; water, solvent, and UV systems | Request the current supplier recommendation | Screen after the film already lays down and cures acceptably |
Use 3345 for a repeatable wetting or leveling failure
3345 is the appropriate first route when the liquid coating pulls away from the substrate, develops craters, or retains orange peel despite stable preparation and application. The supplier lists a surface tension of no more than 25 mN/m and compatibility with water-based systems.
Do not jump to the maximum published dosage. Compare a blank with a compact ladder and record dynamic foam, sag, craters, leveling, gloss, haze, edge coverage, and intercoat adhesion. If contamination is driving the defect, stronger surface-tension reduction may move the crater rather than solve the cause.
Use DF-D9904BR when the failure is air release
DF-D9904BR is a water-based, silica-free defoamer with 30% active material. The key restriction is addition method: the supplier calls for high shear, typically during grinding. That makes it a planned manufacturing-stage comparison rather than a generic tank-side fix after the batch is complete.
Prepare the defoamer-containing samples with the same mixing energy, sequence, temperature, and hold time. Compare foam generation during manufacture, foam decay after agitation, microbubbles in the wet film, pinholes after cure, gloss, clarity, craters, and storage stability.
Use 3501 for sticking and handling after cure
3501 should be evaluated when the wet film and cure already pass but coated parts block, imprint, or mark during stacking, winding, or packaging. Duplicate the production contact face, pressure, temperature, humidity, dwell time, and time from cure to packing.
Anti-sticking is not the only acceptance criterion. Repeat gloss, haze, slip, adhesion, recoating, printing, gluing, and cleaning tests. Request the current technical data sheet because the public page does not give one universal dosage.
Control the waterborne variables first
- Condition raw materials. Record batch, age, temperature, water quality, pH, and resin neutralization.
- Standardize manufacture. Fix vessel geometry, addition order, blade position, tip speed, time, and let-down procedure.
- Standardize application. Measure viscosity at a defined temperature and shear; hold substrate, wet-film weight, spray or drawdown settings, flash, and cure constant.
- Separate foam generation from foam release. Record both agitation foam and cured-film microbubbles.
- Condition before judgment. Compare appearance and performance after a defined cure age rather than only immediately after drying.
Use a measurable validation matrix
For each single-additive route, test a blank and two or three levels inside current supplier guidance. Record wetting, craters, pinholes, foam height and decay, gloss, haze, color, leveling, sag, dry time, blocking, adhesion, hardness, abrasion, and chemical resistance. Repeat the best result after storage and on the actual production substrate.
ASTM D523 describes specular gloss, ASTM D3359 covers tape adhesion ratings, ASTM D3363 covers pencil film hardness, and ASTM D4060 covers Taber abrasion for applicable planar rigid samples. Use the methods appropriate to the substrate and agree conditioning, film thickness, and pass/fail criteria in advance.
Troubleshoot mixed failure patterns
Foam falls in the tank, but craters increase
Reduce the defoamer level and review dispersion, compatibility, and contamination. A defoamer pass requires both air control and an acceptable cured surface.
Leveling improves, but foam becomes persistent
Review 3345 level, mixing energy, surfactant package, and defoamer balance. Do not solve the new problem by stacking several additives without single-variable controls.
Blocking improves only on fresh panels
Repeat after the actual cure-to-pack interval and warm-stack exposure. Check whether incomplete cure, retained water, or plasticization—not surface chemistry—is controlling the result.

Frequently asked questions
Can DF-D9904BR be added after the batch is finished?
Its published instruction calls for high-shear or grind-stage incorporation. A later addition should not be assumed effective; validate the exact procedure against a correctly incorporated control.
Can 3345 replace a defoamer?
No. Wetting/leveling and foam control are different functions. Diagnose whether air is being generated, stabilized, or trapped before selecting a defoamer route.
Should all three products be combined?
Only after single-product trials show that more than one independent failure remains. Use the lowest effective levels and repeat the complete appearance, cure, adhesion, and handling matrix.
