3170 vs 5000 vs D9000 is an aqueous-entry comparison, not a three-way waterborne shortlist. CHLUMIAG® 3170 can enter aqueous work only after hydrophilic-solvent pre-dilution. CHLUMIAG® 5000 is a dedicated water-only emulsion. CHLUMICRYL® AG-D9000 is solvent-only and belongs as a non-aqueous control.

Choose by incorporation route and resin/cure evidence before cleanability. Water compatibility, emulsion stability and quantified hydroxyl data are different formulation questions.

Use 3170 for controlled aqueous entry

3170 supports UV and solvent systems directly, while aqueous use requires pre-dilution with a hydrophilic solvent. That instruction is a formulation gate, not an optional convenience. Record solvent identity, ratio, addition order, temperature, pH and shear.

The page describes reactive OH groups but publishes no OH value or equivalent. Obtain current data before 2K or bake stoichiometry. Test dilution clarity, shock, viscosity, foam, storage, film haze, cure, adhesion and cleanability.

Select the hydrophilic solvent with the resin/dispersion supplier and account for its amount in VOC, coalescence, drying, flash, water sensitivity and worker-safety review. “Hydrophilic” does not mean every alcohol, ether or ester produces the same dilution stability or film.

Use 5000 for a dedicated water emulsion

5000 is a semi-transparent 50%-active modified-polysiloxane emulsion and is explicitly limited to water-based systems. Its 0.5–5% product range equals about 0.25–2.5% active, before considering formulation-specific effectiveness.

Check pH compatibility, freeze/heat cycles, centrifuge where appropriate, viscosity drift, foam, particle/coagulum, clarity, cure and water resistance. Do not infer solvent or oil compatibility from the family name.

Addition order matters: compare slow addition under controlled shear with the intended production sequence. Record local shock, seed, gel, viscosity spike and foam. A sample that looks stable immediately should be filtered and rechecked after aging and application.

D9000 is the non-aqueous control

D9000 provides the strongest quantitative hydroxyl evidence in this comparison—OH 45–60 mg KOH/g—but its page limits it to solvent systems. It requires xylene dilution and specific two-pack/bake and varnish-compatibility attention.

If the formulation goal is waterborne, D9000 is not a fallback after 3170 or 5000 fails. Move to another verified aqueous product rather than forcing a solvent-only material into the system.

For a separate solvent benchmark, calculate D9000 hydroxyl contribution using the current COA/TDS and include its xylene dilution in the formulation. Keep those results outside the waterborne ranking because the resin, carrier and cure platform are different.

Compare active dose and carrier load

3170 and D9000 are 100% active; 5000 is 50% active. In addition, 3170 brings hydrophilic solvent into aqueous work and D9000 brings xylene through its prescribed dilution. Include carrier contribution, VOC, flash, drying and water sensitivity.

Normalize active percentage only within a scientifically justified design. Equal active content does not make the polymers or reaction paths equivalent.

Report supplied-product percentage, active percentage, carrier percentage and verified functional-group contribution. This four-part record prevents a water emulsion from being judged against a solvent concentrate on an undefined basis.

Build an aqueous stability gate

  1. Prepare additive dilution separately and inspect clarity/phase.
  2. Add at controlled order, pH, temperature and shear.
  3. Measure immediate and 24-hour viscosity, foam and appearance.
  4. Run heat/freeze or customer-defined storage cycles.
  5. Apply aged material and recheck cure, adhesion and cleanability.

Test easy-clean performance after cure

Define soil or marker, dwell, cleaning agent, cloth, load, strokes and cycles. Report residual stain, gloss/color change, coating removal, contact angle and repeat performance. A high initial contact angle does not prove durable cleanability.

ASTM D1308 compares effects of defined household chemicals on coating systems. ASTM D5402 can track solvent resistance of chemically curing coatings while warning that it does not alone prove full cure. ASTM D3359 offers a limited tape-adhesion screen.

Its active content is 50%, unlike the 100%-active comparators.
