Waterborne Inkjet Additives: Jetting Before Wetting

Waterborne inkjet ink additives must pass printhead qualification before substrate wetting or dried-print claims matter. Filtration, particles, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, waveform, drops, latency and restart come first. A product listed for inkjet use is only a candidate, not proof of nozzle safety.

Start with printhead specifications

Obtain the approved viscosity and surface-tension windows at operating temperature, maximum particle or agglomerate size, filter rating, conductivity/pH limits and material-compatibility requirements. Record recirculating or non-recirculating architecture, nozzle plate, waveform, frequency, drop volume and maintenance cycle.

Use the printhead supplier’s fluid-compatibility and waveform procedure when available. Expose wetted seals, tubing, filters and adhesives for the required duration, then inspect swelling, extraction, mass change and contamination. A formula can jet briefly yet damage the fluid path during storage or repeated thermal cycling.

Qualify filtration and storage

Measure particle-size distribution and large-particle tail before and after aging, freeze/thaw or heat storage as appropriate. Record filter pressure, throughput, extractables and foam. A formula that passes a fresh membrane once may still agglomerate, shed material or lose jetting after circulation.

Resolve the 2100 identity conflict

Two live product records conflict: CHLUMIAG® 2100 und CHLUMIWE® 2100. Both state 0.1–1.0%, water/solvent/UV scope and inkjet use, but the site does not establish one unambiguous current brand identity. Require exact commercial name, code, TDS and COA for the supplied lot.

Screen 2100 only after stable jetting

Begin at the supplier-approved low level and recheck viscosity, static and dynamic surface behavior, filterability and waveform response. Record drop velocity, volume, directionality, satellites, nozzle-plate wetting, missing nozzles, decap/latency and restart. Only then compare dot gain, coalescence, pinning, density and adhesion on the substrate.

Gate 3062 by printhead performance

A printing-ink defoamer may reduce bulk foam but introduce incompatibility, filter loss, satellites or nozzle-plate wetting. Screen 3062 only for reproduced air and within 0.1–0.5%. Run circulation-length testing, filter pressure, drop watching, latency and restart at the low, middle and high study points.

Keep 3501 behind a data gate

First correct drying energy, airflow, coat weight, substrate absorption and stack/rewind conditions. Then obtain active content, recommended dose and a defined block or release test. An inkjet application listing does not prove compatibility with a specific head, waveform, colorant or binder.

Normalize printed density

ASTM D7305 measures reflection density for prints on flat paper, film or board, not metal or foil. Match density and image area before comparing rub or water response. Also record line quality, satellites and coalescence because equal density can hide poor drop placement.

Measure rub independently

ASTM D5264 provides a comparative Sutherland rub practice for printed materials. Define receptor, load, cycles, conditioning and evaluation. It does not validate nozzle reliability or replace the end-use substrate and finishing sequence.

Test water resistance after drying

Define drip, spray, immersion and wet-rub conditions appropriate to the job. Report bleed, transfer, density/color change, film disruption and adhesion after a fixed dry/cure period. Do not attribute poor waterfastness to wetting additive selection before binder and cure are confirmed.

Run aging and restart tests

Repeat filtration, drops, latency, decap and restart after storage and the maximum production circulation time. Include fresh make-up additions and temperature drift. A drawdown or ten-minute jetting demonstration is insufficient for release.

Challenge the candidate at the low and high ends of the approved temperature and firing-frequency window. Count recoverable and unrecoverable missing nozzles after planned idle periods. Record cleaning fluid and purge consumption, since an apparent wetting benefit can be commercially negative if maintenance demand increases.

Decision rules

  • Reject any candidate that narrows the printhead operating window.
  • Confirm the exact 2100 identity before dosing.
  • Use 3062 only for measured air and full jetting validation.
  • Gate 3501 by dose, head compatibility and a defined dry-film test.
