Waterborne overprint varnish additives should be chosen by where the film first fails. Use CHLUMILE® 3345 for wetting and leveling, CHLUMICRYL® DF-D9904BR for microbubble and pinhole control, and CHLUMIFE® 3482/3482X for slip and anti-sticking after a continuous film already forms.
DF-D912R is published for solvent-based systems, so it is not the waterborne OPV recommendation in this guide. DF-D9904BR is the documented water-based, silica-free route for coatings and inks.

Use 3345 when the OPV does not lie down cleanly
3345 should enter first when the liquid film shows poor wetting, craters, orange peel, or unstable gloss. Its published surface tension is ≤25 mN/m at 25°C, but that value is not a target for the complete varnish. Measure the actual OPV and check the ink, board or film surface used in production.
Before increasing dosage, audit contamination, substrate/ink treatment, application viscosity, cell/roller condition, film weight, drying, and interactions with defoamers. A smoother drawdown is not acceptable if rub, adhesion, gluing, or overprinting is damaged.
Use DF-D9904BR for waterborne microbubbles and pinholes
DF-D9904BR is the correct water-based defoamer route in this comparison. The supplier describes it as a 30%-active, silica-free polyether-modified polysiloxane compound for preventing microbubbles and pinholes in water-based coatings and inks.
Its addition method matters: pre-disperse in a compatible co-solvent and add under high-speed stirring during the grind; the supplier does not recommend late addition. Compare foam during manufacture, application, and drying because one measurement in a cup will not reproduce the whole OPV process.
Use 3482/3482X when the dried surface still drags or blocks
Move 3482/3482X forward only after drying and film continuity are stable. It is the water-based slip, anti-sticking, and abrasion-handling route—not the correction for persistent foam or poor first contact.
Pre-dilute with water in several steps before addition and do not use alcohol as the dilution route. Measure static/dynamic friction where applicable, conditioned blocking, rub, gloss, pinholes, adhesion, gluing, lamination, and any heat-seal or overprint operation.
A production-relevant OPV trial
- Freeze the base varnish. Keep polymer, neutralization, wax, co-solvent, solids, pH, viscosity, and application weight constant.
- Reproduce air input. Record mixing blade, speed, time, recirculation, pump, anilox/roller, and hold time before application.
- Use one additive route per ladder. Compare a blank plus three controlled levels; document dilution medium, addition point, and shear.
- Measure wet and dry defects. Track foam collapse, microbubbles, craters, leveling, gloss, pinholes, drying, and residual tack.
- Test conversion and handling. Compare rub, friction, blocking, adhesion, gluing, folding, and storage at the customer’s temperature and pressure.
ASTM D5264 covers abrasion resistance of printed materials using the Sutherland rub tester, ASTM D523 covers specular gloss, and ASTM D3359 covers tape ratings for coating adhesion. For plastic film and sheeting, ASTM D1894 covers static and kinetic friction. Agree the exact receptor, load, cycles, conditioning, substrate, and pass limit with the converter.
Failure patterns to catch early
Foam decreases, but craters appear
Reduce defoamer level, revisit dispersion, and compare compatibility in the complete varnish. Do not add extra wetting agent until the defoamer interaction is understood.
Slip improves, but gluing or overprinting fails
The surface-active material may be interfering with the downstream bond. Move down the dosage ladder and repeat after the actual aging interval.
The lab drawdown is clear, but the press shows microbubbles
Reproduce production shear, recirculation, pump suction, viscosity, anilox/roller behavior, and dwell time. Static drawdowns often under-represent air input.
The varnish blocks despite a slip additive
Check drying, residual water, polymer Tg/MFFT, film weight, stack temperature, pressure, and dwell time. Friction reduction and blocking are different properties.
Food-packaging caution
