Waterborne plastic coating additives should be selected by the first failed stage, not by the appearance of the final defect alone. Poor coverage may be a substrate-energy or contamination problem; pinholes may come from retained process air; uneven flow may reflect compatibility. For the documented Longchang routes, WD-D545 is the plastic-paint-specific wetting option, DF-D9904BR is the waterborne high-shear defoamer option, and 3467 is the compatibility-focused surface-control option.
None of these products creates adhesion to untreated polypropylene or polyethylene by itself. Resin choice, plastic grade, mold-release contamination, cleaning, pretreatment, film build, flash, and cure remain part of the coating system. Approve an additive only when it solves the target failure without reducing adhesion, appearance, recoat, water resistance, or storage stability.

Control the plastic surface before formulation changes
Record polymer family and grade, recycled content, filler, mold-release agent, cleaning chemistry, handling, surface treatment, and time from treatment to coating. Compare a known-good panel with the failing production part. A wetting additive can improve spreading, but it cannot remove silicone oil, restore decayed treatment, or compensate for an incompatible binder.
Use the same part geometry when possible. Flat laboratory panels may hide edge pullback, recess pooling, spray shadowing, and heat history that appear on molded parts.
Use WD-D545 for a confirmed wetting failure
WD-D545 is the most direct first screen when a clean, correctly treated plastic still shows incomplete wetting. Its public page specifically lists waterborne plastic paint, gives 0.1–0.5% total-formula guidance, and allows incorporation at any production stage. Start near the low end and compare against a blank under fixed application conditions.
Measure wet-film continuity, craters, edge coverage, leveling, sag, gloss, haze, and adhesion after full cure. If the coating wets but later delaminates, return to binder, pretreatment, cure, and contamination rather than increasing wetting additive automatically.
Use DF-D9904BR for retained process air
Choose DF-D9904BR when the evidence follows grinding, letdown, pumping, recirculation, or atomization. The product page requires high-shear incorporation and recommends adding it to co-solvent before the abrasive/grind phase. Prepare a correctly incorporated control instead of judging it from a late addition to a finished batch.
Record foam height and decay, wet-film bubbles, cured pinholes, density or entrained-air indication, and appearance. Excess defoamer or poor compatibility may produce craters, haze, gloss loss, or adhesion changes, so the lowest passing level is usually the better candidate.
Use 3467 only for compatibility and flow
Screen 3467 when the substrate is already wetted and the remaining problem is film uniformity or compatibility. Its public page covers waterborne systems and emphasizes compatibility over feel. Because the published waterborne range is broad, use a small internally justified ladder rather than treating the upper figure as a default.
Do not mix it casually with other additives: the page lists an avoid-mixing precaution. Test it alone first, then evaluate any required combination in the exact order of addition.
Build a substrate-specific trial
- Lock the substrate. Use the same polymer grade, pretreatment, cleaning, age, and geometry.
- Lock manufacture. Hold addition order, shear, temperature, pH, solids, and hold time.
- Lock application. Hold viscosity, atomization or drawdown, wet-film build, flash, and cure.
- Compare one mechanism. Run a blank plus a short supplier-supported ladder for only the relevant route.
- Age the panels. Repeat adhesion and appearance after cure, water exposure, and the customer’s recoat window.
Measure adhesion and water resistance with appearance
ASTM D823 describes practices for producing uniform coating films on test panels. ASTM D870 covers controlled water-immersion resistance and cautions against equating laboratory duration directly with natural exposure. For plastic-specific tape testing, ASTM F1842 adapts tape adhesion for membrane-switch plastic substrates; confirm whether it fits the actual part and specification.
Approve against the customer’s required plastic, pretreatment, cure, film thickness, adhesion method, water or chemical exposure, gloss, color, haze, flexibility, recoat, blocking, and storage window. A smooth panel that fails aged adhesion is not a passing formulation.
Common selection errors
Using a feel additive as the default third route
CHLUMIFE® 3166 is not a first-choice route here: its product page warns of pinholes, whitening, and foam stabilization. Surface feel should be optimized only after wetting, air release, adhesion, and recoat are secure.
Calling every hole a wetting defect
Map defect timing and location. Immediate retraction suggests wetting or contamination; bubbles emerging during flash or cure point toward entrained air, outgassing, or process conditions.
Approving only fresh adhesion
Plastic coatings can change after water exposure, thermal cycling, or time. Include the customer’s aged condition and inspect whether failure occurs at the plastic/coating interface or between coats.
