Use DP-D242 for resin-free and multi-pigment work
DP-D242 is the first screen when the laboratory wants a resin-free matting paste or needs one dispersant route across organic pigments, organic bentonite, and matting powder. Its page also states that it can reduce floating and flooding in multi-pigment systems.
The public page does not provide a numerical dosage despite showing a dosage heading. Request the current technical data sheet instead of inventing a range. Build a demand curve against paste viscosity, grind, color, floating/flooding, let-down compatibility, storage, final gloss, haze, and film defects.
Use DP-D2608R for inorganic filler stability
DP-D2608R is an acrylate copolymer solution with an alkaline pigment-affinity group and published use for matting powder and inorganic fillers. The supplier gives 3–15% based on matting powder and calls for high-speed dispersion after resin, solvent, and dispersant are mixed.
Because the product has a published amine value of 55–65 mg KOH/g, check compatibility with acid-sensitive resins, catalysts, cure packages, and colorants. Measure viscosity at more than one shear condition, settling, redispersibility, gloss, haze, cure, and storage.
Use DP-D2609R for high-concentration matte paste
DP-D2609R is positioned for matting powder, glass powder, and ultrafine talc where high concentration and viscosity reduction matter. It also supports directional alignment of matting powder and lower gloss. The supplier gives 2–20% based on matting powder.
In 2K PU systems, the page explicitly requires evaluation of pot life and drying speed. Track mixed viscosity and usability over time, cure development, hardness, solvent/chemical resistance, and final gloss. A low-viscosity paste that shortens usable pot life is not an automatic improvement.
Build a fair paste comparison
- Use one powder lot. Fix silica/filler chemistry, treatment, particle size, moisture, and loading.
- Fix architecture. Decide resin-free or resin-containing paste and keep solvent/monomer, resin, and solids constant.
- Fix dispersion energy. Record blade, vessel, tip speed, time, temperature, and addition order.
- Use product-specific levels. Do not compare equal weight blindly; use a demand curve within current guidance.
- Use the same let-down. Compare compatibility, final viscosity, gloss, haze, settling, cure, and film defects.
Measure viscosity, grind, and gloss correctly
ASTM D2196 covers rotational-viscometer characterization of apparent viscosity, shear thinning, and thixotropy; one speed alone may not describe a non-Newtonian paste. ASTM D1210 covers Hegman-gage fineness of dispersion for pigment-vehicle systems. ASTM D523 covers specular gloss.
For matting silica, a grind reading does not fully describe agglomeration, distribution, or film appearance. Report the same drawdown substrate, film thickness, cure, gloss geometry, conditioning, and observation method. Include rheology recovery and storage because settling and application occur at different shear rates.
