First, the causes and solutions of plastic yellowing.

The effective solution to plastic yellowing is to add antioxidants, ultraviolet absorbers, light stabilizers, etc., which can effectively prevent and delay the occurrence of yellowing. However, there are many kinds of antioxidants, from which the selection of suitable products requires certain technical support and experience.
The important culprit causing oxidative yellowing of plastics and ultraviolet rays, the source is mainly sunlight, therefore, especially in the face of the production of products need to be used outdoors customers, will add a certain amount of ultraviolet absorber, light stabilizers, etc., to delay yellowing.

Second, what is the difference between the classification of antioxidants and the mechanism?
One is the main antioxidant: capture peroxide radicals, mainly hindered phenolic antioxidants; the main anti-space hindered phenols, antioxidants 1010, antioxidants 1076 that belong to this category, through the capture of free radicals generated in the process of degradation of plastics and the long-term continuity of the role of antioxidant.
One kind of auxiliary antioxidant: decomposition of hydroperoxides, mainly phosphite esters, thioesters. Auxiliary antioxidants – phosphite and thioesters, 168 belongs to the phosphite auxiliary antioxidants, through the decomposition of plastic further degradation of peroxides generated to achieve the purpose of antioxidant, mainly to provide heat processing stability; the main antioxidant + auxiliary antioxidants can be used together to produce synergistic effects (a simple analogy: 1 + 1 > 2).

According to the chemical structure, 1010,1076 belongs to hindered phenol, 168 belongs to phosphite.
According to the mechanism of action, 1010,1076 belongs to capture free radicals and 168 belongs to decompose hydroperoxides.
The first two are the main antioxidants, 168 is an auxiliary antioxidant, the main antioxidant is to focus on the product’s long-term anti-aging, auxiliary antioxidants are generally stabilized in the process!

In general, according to each manufacturer’s production process and raw materials, solvents, additives, fillers, which stage of yellowing, yellowing degree of difference, and recommended the use of different antioxidants.

2 Basic characteristics

(1) Antioxidant 1010 is a phenolic antioxidant, which is one of the excellent varieties of antioxidants at present.

(2) Antioxidant 1010 has excellent antioxidant performance for polypropylene and polyethylene. It can effectively extend the service life of the products.

(3) Antioxidant 1010 has small volatility, good extraction resistance, high thermal stability, long lasting effect, no coloring, no pollution, .

(4) Antioxidant 1010 and antioxidant DLTP, 168 and have a synergistic effect.

(5) Antioxidant 1010 is a high molecular weight hindered phenol antioxidant, with low volatility, and not easy to migrate, resistant to extraction.

(6) Antioxidant 1010 can effectively prevent thermo-oxidative degradation of polymer materials during long-term aging, and is also an efficient processing stabilizer that improves the discoloration resistance of polymer materials under high-temperature processing conditions.

(7) Antioxidant 1010 is used in the field of polyurethane, it can be used in RIM materials, spandex, TPU, adhesives and sealants. It is widely used in olefin resins, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, polyformaldehyde, ABS resin, polyvinyl acetal, synthetic rubber and petroleum products, and the general dosage is 0.1% to 0.5%.

Application areas of antioxidant 1010

Antioxidant 1010 is a poly hindered phenolic antioxidant with good compatibility with most polymers. Antioxidant 1010 has good protection against light and heat induced discoloration. It is widely used in PE, PP, PS, polyamide, polyformaldehyde, ABS resin, PVC, synthetic rubber and other polymer materials. Also used to prevent grease and paint thermal oxygen aging.

V. What is the difference between Antioxidant 1010 and Antioxidant 1076?

Both are hindered phenolic antioxidants, but the effective functional group of 1010 is four times more than that of antioxidant 1076, which means that it is more effective. The main considerations for usage are compatibility with the resin at a later stage and processing conditions.

Properties of antioxidant 1010: white crystalline powder. Melting point 119~122℃. No change, no pollution, heat aging resistance, water washing resistance, non-volatile. Widely used in thermal processing of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyformaldehyde, ABS resin and so on. It can prolong the service life of plastic products. It is synthesized from 4-hydroxy-3,5-tert-butylphenylpropionic acid methyl ester made from phenol and then synthesized with pentaerythritol in the presence of sodium methanol catalyst.

Antioxidant 1076 Properties: white crystalline powder. Odorless . Melting point 50~55℃. No pollution, no color change, small volatility, good thermal stability. Good mutual solubility with most polymers. Insoluble in water, soluble in many organic solvents. Used in polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, ABS resin, polyamide, polyester and so on. It is produced by the action of phenol and isobutylene to form 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzenepropanoic acid, and then esterified with octadecanol.
