The photoinitiator TPO has a very wide range of applications. In the printing sector, it is like a precise key that opens the door to high-quality printing, whether it is screen printing inks, lithographic inks or flexographic inks. It also plays a unique role in wood coatings.
TPO is a highly effective radical (1) photoinitiator, which is based on a profound chemical principle. It has absorption characteristics in the long wavelength range that are not found in ordinary substances. Its effective absorption peak is between 350 and 400 nanometers, while the absorption peak of conventional initiators is usually around 420 nanometers. This longer absorption peak is of great significance compared to traditional initiators. Just like a professional marksman, it has a longer range. When exposed to light, it can precisely form the two free radicals benzoyl and phosphite, which quickly initiate the polymerization reaction. This is like a well-choreographed dance, with every move just right, which greatly improves the speed of light curing.
What’s more, TPO has a photobleaching function, which is like magic. It is very good at curing thick films and yellowing-stable coatings. This reminds us of the restoration of cultural relics that require long-term preservation and have high appearance requirements. In some special protective coating applications, this property of TPO can ensure that the coating remains stable for a long time and does not affect the appearance and preservation of the cultural relics due to yellowing. In industrial production, for products with stringent requirements for appearance and quality, such as wood coatings for high-end furniture, this function also ensures that the product will remain as good as new for many years.
From the results of actual experiments, it can be seen that there are strict requirements for the amount of TPO used in different systems. In general, the amount of this product should be 0.5 – 4% w/w. This is the conclusion reached after numerous experiments and data analysis. Just like cooking a delicate dish, the amount of each seasoning needs to be precisely controlled to achieve the best results.
TPO is used in a wide variety of coatings and materials. It is used in UV-curable coatings, printing inks, UV-curable adhesives, optical fiber coatings, photoresists, photopolymer plates, stereolithography resins, composite materials, dental fillings, etc. Take dental fillings as an example. They need to be stable and safe in the complex oral environment. The low volatility and efficient initiation properties of TPO ensure the quality of the filling during the curing process, providing protection for the patient’s oral health. In water-based systems, its low volatility also makes it an ideal choice, which is in line with modern environmental protection concepts and reduces potential harm to the environment and human health.
TPO is also excellent in white systems, where it can achieve complete curing on white or highly titanium-doped pigmented surfaces. The process is like a perfect magic show, with no yellowing after curing and no residue due to low post-polymerisation effects. It also has unique advantages in transparent coatings, and is particularly suitable for products with low odour requirements, such as printing inks for food packaging. When we open food packaging, we don’t smell any pungent odours, and this is thanks to TPO.
Let’s make a new hypothesis: if light initiators need to be used in the outer coating of spacecraft in future space exploration, would TPO be the first choice? The space environment is complex, and it places extremely high demands on the stability and radiation resistance of materials. TPO’s properties may be able to meet these needs. Its fast light curing speed and good stability may provide new solutions for spacecraft protection.
When using TPO, there is one important thing to note: it must be stored and used away from light. Just as precious medicines require special storage conditions, light can affect the properties of TPO, damaging its chemical structure and thus its effectiveness in practical applications.
The recommended dosage of TPO varies in different systems. In colored systems, the recommended dosage is 0.5–3.0%, while in transparent systems, the recommended dosage is 0.3–2.0%. It is like setting different rules for different racing tracks. Only by following these rules can TPO be used to its full potential in each system, achieve perfect curing results, and ensure product quality.
