Then decide whether the remaining defect is wetting, leveling or entrained air.<\/p>\n

Define the basecoat\u2019s place in the system<\/h2>\n

An epoxy basecoat is normally an intermediate layer between a prepared substrate or primer and a finish coat. Its job may include build, filling, barrier continuity, color or surface preparation for the topcoat. It is not automatically the corrosion primer or weathering topcoat. Specify adhesion to the layer below, acceptable recoat window and compatibility with the finish above before optimizing appearance.<\/p>\n

Lock epoxy\u2013amine stoichiometry first<\/h2>\n

Calculate the mix ratio from current epoxy and hardener data on the stated solids basis. Record component temperatures, induction time, dilution after mixing, application time and discarded material at pot-life end. Excess epoxy or amine can leave soft, blush-prone or poorly adhering films. No wetting, leveling or defoaming additive can repair a wrong EEW\/AHEW calculation or an unsuitable curing agent.<\/p>\n

Use D547 for a defined entry problem<\/h2>\n

Start within the published 0.1\u20130.5% range and keep mixed viscosity, film build and cure schedule constant. Examine dewetting, edge pullback and localized craters on the real underlying layer. D547\u2019s page also lists recoat and qualitative defoaming or leveling benefits, but those claims do not establish an optimum dose or cure compatibility in a specific epoxy\/amine package.<\/p>\n

Use 3345 when flow is the controlled variable<\/h2>\n

3345 has a broader 0.1\u20131.0% published range and a documented wetting\/leveling role. Compare low, middle and high levels only after viscosity and application are normalized. Record orange peel, gloss, sag, crater tendency and intercoat adhesion. Reject a smoother basecoat if it creates topcoat separation, poor sanding, recoat failure or a narrow application window.<\/p>\n

Use D9904BR for grind-stage air<\/h2>\n

D9904BR is supplied at 30% active in DPM. Its page calls for co-solvent premixing and high-shear addition during grinding and says post-addition is not recommended. Track wet density before and after dispersion, foam decay, microbubbles and pinholes. Because the carrier and incorporation differ from the 100%-active surface additives, compare on both as-supplied and active-material bases.<\/p>\n

Control water release, induction and pot life<\/h2>\n

Waterborne epoxy films need adequate water evaporation and chemical cure. Fix relative humidity, airflow, substrate temperature and wet film build. Test material immediately after induction and at defined pot-life intervals because viscosity, air release and surface appearance can change while the mixture ages. A good early drawdown does not prove stable late-pot performance.<\/p>\n

Prepare uniform comparative films<\/h2>\n

ASTM D823<\/a> describes practices for producing coatings of uniform thickness on test panels. Use a fixed applicator or controlled spray method, but also reproduce production mixing and application. Record wet and dry film thickness; unequal build can be mistaken for better leveling, barrier performance or abrasion resistance.<\/p>\n

Test adhesion after realistic recoat windows<\/h2>\n

ASTM D3359<\/a> provides tape-test methods for coating adhesion. Use the intended primer\/basecoat\/topcoat stack and test short, target and extended recoat intervals. Document where failure occurs. Tape results are comparative and method-dependent; they do not replace pull-off testing when the specification requires a quantitative tensile value.<\/p>\n

Approve cure and abrasion, not appearance alone<\/h2>\n

Check hardness or solvent resistance over a defined cure timeline, then test abrasion when relevant. ASTM D4060<\/a> covers abrasion resistance by the Taber abrader. Report wheel, load, cycles, conditioning and film thickness. A smoother surface may change measured wear without improving chemical cure, so interpret appearance, cure and abrasion together.<\/p>\n
