What’s the difference between “nail polish” and “gel polish”?

When getting a manicure, do you choose nail polish or gel polish? Do you know the differences between the two? Gel polish is essential for professional manicures—don’t pick the wrong one.

1. Different ingredients: Nail polish primarily consists of 70%-80% volatile solvents, about 15% nitrocellulose, small amounts of oil-based solvents, camphor, titanium dioxide, and oil-soluble pigments. These components form a colored film that adheres to the nail after air-drying.

Gel polish primarily consists of natural resins and colorants. These materials cure under UV light exposure rather than evaporating, forming a plastic-like film.

2. Application Method:

Regular nail polish can be applied directly to the nail and left to air-dry.

Gel polish requires exposure to a specialized UV/LED lamp for curing, typically for about 60 seconds.

Gel polish must be cured using a nail lamp.

3. Different Effects:

Gel polish offers superior wear resistance, gloss, and durability compared to regular nail polish.

Gel polish emits almost no volatile gases and is virtually odorless, whereas regular nail polish may have a pungent smell.

Gel polish also lasts longer than regular nail polish, typically maintaining its appearance for 20-30 days.

4. Removal Methods:

Removing regular nail polish is relatively simple, using specialized nail polish remover liquid or dedicated nail polish remover cream.

Gel polish, however, requires a specialized gel polish remover for removal and may need to be soaked in it to be effectively removed.
