Kationische lichtuithardende systemen hebben de voordelen van lage volumekrimp, geen zuurstofblokkering, lange levensduur van het actieve centrum en de mogelijkheid om uitharding en sterke hechting aan substraten uit te stellen. Kationische fotoinitiator is een belangrijk onderdeel van het kationische lichtuithardingssysteem, maar het absorptiespectrum ligt meestal onder de 300 nm en de emissieband van de veelgebruikte UV-lichtbron komt niet overeen.
