Define the plastic interface<\/h2>\n

Record polymer, grade, molded additives, release agent, cleaning, flame\/corona\/plasma treatment and treatment age. State whether the clearcoat goes directly on plastic, color coat or primer. Use D9904BR for measured air<\/h2>\n

D9904BR is not a post-add rescue. Premix with co-solvent and add under high shear during the grind as directed. Compare wet density, foam decay, microbubbles and cured pinholes. Because it is 30% active in DPM, record carrier load and compare on both as-supplied and active bases.<\/p>\n

Gate 3467 by real PU chemistry<\/h2>\n

The page describes addition with polyol during prepolymerization or later for polyurethane modification. Require exact batch OH, resin OH, isocyanate equivalent, solids and NCO\/OH calculation. The public OH value is only \u226485 mg KOH\/g. Do not apply resin-modification dosage to a generic waterborne clearcoat.<\/p>\n

Keep 3166 outside the first shortlist<\/h2>\n

A transparent plastic clearcoat is especially sensitive to 3166\u2019s explicit pinhole and whitening risks. Its page also warns of foam stabilization and suggests considering antifoam. Do not add one product to create a second defect that then requires another additive. Consider it only after supplier data and a strong feel requirement justify the risk.<\/p>\n

Prepare uniform transparent films<\/h2>\n

ASTM D823<\/a> describes practices for preparing uniform coating films. Fix substrate, treatment age, applicator or spray conditions, film build, temperature, humidity and airflow. Clearcoat thickness strongly affects gloss, cure and defect visibility.<\/p>\n

Measure gloss and clarity separately<\/h2>\n

ASTM D523<\/a> covers specular gloss. Record geometry and backing. Also measure haze or transmission with the customer\u2019s specified method because high gloss does not prove optical clarity. Inspect whitening after water, heat and humidity exposure.<\/p>\n

Check adhesion and abrasion<\/h2>\n

ASTM D3359<\/a> provides tape adhesion methods; document plastic, treatment and failure location. ASTM D4060<\/a> covers Taber abrasion. Report wheel, load, cycles and film thickness and check haze after wear.<\/p>\n

Approve the full plastic system<\/h2>\n

Test water, detergent, heat, humidity, thermal cycling and chemicals required by service. Check stress cracking and adhesion after aging. Apply any repair or recoat at realistic intervals. A clearcoat that looks good initially can fail at the plastic interface later.<\/p>\n

Control water release and film formation<\/h2>\n

Record substrate temperature, relative humidity, airflow, flash time and co-solvent package. A thick waterborne clearcoat can skin at the surface while retaining water below, creating haze or microbubbles that resemble additive failure. Compare target and upper film builds and do not accelerate handling before the specified cure.<\/p>\n

For two-component systems, prepare panels at the beginning, middle and end of pot life. Track viscosity, air release, appearance and adhesion. A formulation that looks clear immediately after mixing can lose compatibility as reaction and water evaporation progress.<\/p>\n
