On steel it may also form part of a corrosion system; on wood it must manage porosity and grain; on plastic it must match surface energy and pretreatment. Its public page supports water-based resin systems, inorganic and organic pigments, and addition before pigment. Use the pigment-specific guidance on the page or current TDS; a carbon-black requirement cannot be copied to titanium dioxide or iron oxide.<\/p>\n<p>Track grind time and energy, fineness, viscosity at more than one shear condition, color strength, rub-up, gloss, settling, hard pack, filtration, and aged stability. A lower mill-base viscosity is not enough if the primer sags, floats, loses adhesion, or destabilizes after letdown.<\/p>\n<h2>Use WD-D545 when the clean substrate does not wet<\/h2>\n<p>WD-D545 is explicitly listed for waterborne wood, industrial, and plastic paints. Screen it after cleaning and preparation are controlled. Its addition flexibility makes a post-addition diagnostic possible, but the production formula still needs a defined addition stage and mixing history.<\/p>\n<p>For wood, compare penetration and grain raise with holdout and sanding. For plastic, compare coverage and aged adhesion on the exact grade and pretreatment. For metal, compare cleaned panels and protect recoat and corrosion requirements. Do not use additional WD-D545 to compensate for oil, mold release, dust, moisture, or an incompatible resin.<\/p>\n<h2>Use DF-D9904BR when air release fails<\/h2>\n<p>Choose DF-D9904BR when foam generation and cured pinholes follow a defined high-shear or pumping condition. Its page recommends combining with co-solvent and adding to the abrasive\/grind phase under high-speed stirring. Prepare that route correctly before judging performance.<\/p>\n<p>Measure foam height and decay, density, wet-film bubbles, pinhole count, craters, gloss, adhesion, recoat, water resistance, and storage. Lower foam accompanied by surface defects or intercoat weakness is a failed result.<\/p>\n<h2>Run a controlled primer matrix<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Fix raw materials.<\/strong> Hold binder, pigment\/filler lots, neutralizer, pH, solids, and water quality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix manufacture.<\/strong> Hold sequence, shear, time, temperature, fineness, letdown, filtration, and aging.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix the substrate.<\/strong> Record preparation, treatment, moisture, temperature, and time to coat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix application and cure.<\/strong> Hold viscosity, film build, flash, airflow, temperature, humidity, and recoat time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change one function.<\/strong> Compare a blank with a compact dosage ladder for only one product route.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Use measurements that match the claimed function<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/d1210-05r22.html\">ASTM D1210<\/a> evaluates pigment dispersion fineness, while <a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/standards\/d2196\">ASTM D2196<\/a> characterizes rotational viscosity, shear thinning, and thixotropy. For coating adhesion, <a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/d3359-23.html\">ASTM D3359<\/a> is specifically developed for metallic substrates and is insensitive to all but large adhesion differences; choose a substrate-appropriate method and customer specification.<\/p>\n<p>Document wet and dry film thickness, coverage, sag, leveling, gloss, color, adhesion, recoat, sanding, water\/chemical resistance, storage stability, and the customer\u2019s end-use test. Standardize panel preparation and report failure location, not only a pass\/fail number.<\/p>\n<h2>Common primer-selection errors<\/h2>\n<h3>Testing two wetting agents before checking the grind<\/h3>\n<p>If viscosity, fineness, color, or settling fails first, a second surface-wetting route does not address the bottleneck.
