Binder chemistry, corrosion inhibitors, pigment volume concentration, metal preparation, film build, cure, edges, and defects still determine whether the primer protects steel.<\/p>\n<p>Start by locating the first failure: the grind, the liquid primer, application on metal, flash\/cure, or corrosion exposure. Include edges, welds, and any production contamination. These variables must be held constant before an additive comparison is meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>None of the three products in this guide is described on its public page as a corrosion inhibitor. Their job is to help the designed primer disperse, wet, or release air so the protective film can be manufactured and applied consistently.<\/p>\n<h2>Use DP-D2791 when the grind is the bottleneck<\/h2>\n<p>DP-D2791 is the relevant first screen when waterborne pigment dispersion shows excessive viscosity, poor fineness development, weak color, settling, or limited pigment loading. Its page covers inorganic and organic pigments, reports viscosity reduction and pigment spreading, and requires addition to the grind before pigment. DP-D2791 is not a corrosion inhibitor.<\/p>\n<p>Base dosage on the actual pigment and current technical data rather than transferring one value across titanium dioxide, iron oxide, carbon black, and organic colors. Measure fineness, viscosity at defined shear, color strength, rub-up, gloss, settling, hard-pack tendency, and aged stability. Then confirm corrosion performance because improved grind behavior alone is not proof of protection.<\/p>\n<h2>Use WD-D547 for a confirmed metal-wetting problem<\/h2>\n<p>After the panel and pretreatment are controlled, screen WD-D547 when the liquid primer retracts, leaves bare areas, or forms compatibility-related craters. Start at the lower end of the published 0.1\u20130.5% range and evaluate wetting, leveling, sag, intercoat adhesion, and recoat together.<\/p>\n<p>If defects track fingerprints, oil, rinse residue, compressed air, or one panel lot, correct the contamination. A wetting additive may spread over a contaminated surface without creating a durable bond.<\/p>\n<h2>Use DF-D9904BR for high-shear microfoam<\/h2>\n<p>DF-D9904BR fits retained air in a waterborne process when foam follows grind, pumping, recirculation, or spray. Follow its incorporation instruction: add to co-solvent first and distribute during the abrasive\/grind stage under high shear. A finished-primer post-addition trial is not equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>Compare foam generation and decay, density, wet-film bubbles, cured pinholes, craters, gloss, adhesion, and storage. Select the lowest level that controls air without introducing incompatibility.<\/p>\n<h2>Build a corrosion-relevant experiment<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Prepare matched panels.<\/strong> Record metal, preparation, profile, pretreatment, and cleaning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix the formula.<\/strong> Hold binder, neutralizer, inhibitor, pigment\/filler lot, PVC, pH, solids, and water quality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix manufacture.<\/strong> Hold sequence, shear, temperature, fineness target, letdown, filtration, and aging.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix application.<\/strong> Hold viscosity, spray or drawdown, wet\/dry film build, flash, cure, and edge treatment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change one route.<\/strong> Compare a blank with a short dosage ladder for only the diagnosed failure.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Read corrosion tests correctly<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/standards\/b117\">ASTM B117<\/a> provides a controlled salt-spray environment but warns that standalone results do not reliably predict natural service. Pair the exposure with defined evaluation: <a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/standards\/d1654\">ASTM D1654<\/a> addresses coated specimens after corrosive environments, while <a href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/standards\/d610\">ASTM D610<\/a> covers visual rust grading. Use the customer\u2019s substrate, scribe, duration, acceptance criteria, replicates, and failure ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Also record blistering, underfilm creep, edge rust, unscribed-field rust, adhesion, water resistance, film thickness, gloss, and cure. A lower foam count is useful only if the complete DTM system still meets corrosion and adhesion requirements.<\/p>\n<h2>Common DTM primer errors<\/h2>\n<h3>Calling a dispersant an anti-corrosion additive<\/h3>\n<p>DP-D2791 can improve pigment dispersion and mill-base handling. It does not substitute for corrosion-active pigments, inhibitor design, pretreatment, binder barrier properties, film build, or cure.<\/p>\n<h3>Using WD-D547 before cleaning the metal<\/h3>\n<p>First compare cleaned and deliberately contaminated controls.
